They report millions of departures of individuals who were in the country illegally, coinciding with a sharp decline in border crossings.
The administration has also emphasized its efforts in deportation and apprehension. As of May 17th, nearly 900,000 individuals who were in the country illegally have been deported. Furthermore, more than 900,000 others have been arrested.
These figures are being presented as evidence that the administration’s immigration crackdown is reshaping migration patterns. This comes after a period of record illegal crossings experienced during the tenure of former President Joe Biden.
A key initiative promoted by the administration is “self-deportation” facilitated by the CBP Home app. This application allows migrants to voluntarily leave the United States. The program offers assistance with travel arrangements and provides financial support to those who choose this option.
The DHS has defended its advertising campaigns, which have faced scrutiny from the Senate. They assert that these campaigns have been instrumental in driving self-deportations, estimating that 2.2 million individuals have left voluntarily. The department also claims these efforts have saved taxpayers approximately $39 billion.
According to the DHS, the self-deportation program is considerably more cost-effective than traditional deportation proceedings. Its primary objective is to encourage migrants who are in the U.S. without legal status to depart voluntarily.
These reported numbers emerge at a time when the administration is also touting substantial decreases in illegal crossings. Officials characterize this as the cessation of “catch-and-release” policies at the southern border.

Just last week, U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) stated that Border Patrol has completed a full year without releasing illegal immigrants directly into the U.S. interior after they were apprehended at the border. This marks a significant shift in operational procedures.
CBP data indicates a dramatic fall in apprehensions at the southwestern border. In April, Border Patrol recorded 8,943 apprehensions. This represents a 94% decrease compared to the Biden administration’s monthly average.
The April figure is also 96% lower than the peak recorded in December 2023. This substantial drop underscores the effectiveness of recent enforcement strategies, according to the department.
Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin recently stated that “the days of catch and release are over.” He argued that the administration’s current enforcement policies are acting as a deterrent, discouraging migrants from attempting to enter the country illegally.
The administration has also pointed to other contributing factors behind the observed deterrence effect. These include increased operations by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), stricter asylum restrictions, and expanded interior enforcement measures.
Immigration analysts generally agree that the administration’s more stringent enforcement approach has indeed led to a reduction in illegal crossings. However, some experts express differing views on how the DHS characterizes certain figures related to migrant releases and removals.
