SouthernWorldwide.com – A significant challenge to the leadership of Keir Starmer, the leader of the Labour Party, is looming, potentially as early as next week. This comes in the wake of substantial losses the party experienced in the recent local elections held on Thursday.
Labour MP Catherine West has publicly stated her intention to initiate a leadership contest if no Cabinet minister steps forward to challenge Starmer by Monday. She conveyed this to the BBC, signaling a potential internal party upheaval.
West emphasized that she is putting the current Cabinet “on notice.” This statement suggests a deadline for internal action before she takes her own steps.
“I’m putting people on notice — if I don’t hear by Monday morning of some leadership hopefuls, I will be asking everybody in the Parliamentary Labour Party to put a name against my name, because we need to get this ball rolling,” she told the outlet.
Her preferred scenario, however, is an internal reshuffle within the Cabinet. She believes there is ample talent available within the party for such a move.

“But my preferred option is for the Cabinet to do a reshuffle within itself, where there’s plenty of talent and for Keir to be given a different role, which he might enjoy, perhaps an international role, and then for others to come to the fore, who can communicate the message, who are very able, so we can have minimum fuss,” she continued.
To officially trigger a leadership contest, West would require the backing of at least 20% of Labour MPs. This translates to a minimum of 81 Members of Parliament.
She reported that approximately 10 MPs are currently supporting her initiative. West expressed optimism that this number would grow, suggesting a broader dissatisfaction within the party ranks.
The Labour Party experienced significant setbacks in this week’s elections, with reports indicating around 1,400 losses across the United Kingdom. The Reform UK party also made notable gains, according to information from GB News.
Keir Starmer has taken responsibility for these electoral defeats but has so far resisted calls for his resignation. He stated that he is “not going to walk away and plunge the country into chaos.”
Despite his public stance, Starmer has not definitively ruled out a managed departure from his leadership position. He is expected to address the ongoing situation and the calls for his resignation on Monday.
As of Friday evening, the BBC reported that 22 Labour MPs have publicly called for the prime minister to step down or to establish a clear timeline for his exit from leadership.
Catherine West has not put forward a specific candidate to replace Starmer. She indicated that the lack of a clear successor is part of the current challenge.
“I don’t have a candidate,” she said. “That’s part of the problem.”
“But I think there are several people who would like to do it, who have been planning for months, but I’m very surprised that none of them has popped up today to say ‘I will do it’,” she added.
