NAACP Member: Politics in Football is ‘Out of Bounds

SouthernWorldwide.com – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), an organization historically at the forefront of the fight for equal justice, has initiated a campaign titled “Out of Bounds.” This campaign aims to persuade Black athletes, fans, and donors to boycott college football programs located in southern states, citing disputes over congressional redistricting.

The connection between college football and redistricting is nonexistent. This initiative does not represent civil rights advocacy; instead, it is seen as the exploitation of a popular American pastime and the economic influence of Black athletic talent for partisan political advantage.

As a lifelong member of the NAACP, a former Indiana attorney general, and a prosecutor with decades dedicated to equal justice, the author expresses profound sorrow and anger. The organization that once played a pivotal role in dismantling Jim Crow laws is now involving amateur sports in cultural conflicts, transforming football fields into political arenas and potentially jeopardizing the very opportunities it claims to champion.

The NAACP’s chosen targets are predictably one-sided: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and South Carolina. These states, led by Republicans, have revised their electoral maps following recent Supreme Court decisions that restrict racial gerrymandering. Notably, the NAACP remains silent on similar redistricting efforts undertaken by Democrats in states with a Democratic majority.

California, for instance, aggressively redrew its districts to favor Democrats, potentially securing additional seats. In Virginia, a Democratic attempt to reshape districts for partisan gain was ultimately blocked by the state’s own Supreme Court.

This selective targeting clearly indicates that the campaign is driven by political motives rather than genuine principle. Redistricting disputes are a nationwide phenomenon. Singling out Republican-led states in the South appears to be an act of regional and political scapegoating, rather than a consistent advocacy for fair electoral maps.

The contradiction becomes even more apparent with the NAACP’s opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The organization criticizes requirements for proof of citizenship and enhanced voter identification as racist voter suppression tactics. Simultaneously, it advocates for the creation and maintenance of Black voting blocs and Black congressional districts.

This approach is perceived by some as a form of segregation under a different guise. The NAACP historically fought for decades to remove racial classifications from voting and representation. Now, it appears to be defending them. True equality under the law, it is argued, should involve colorblind districts drawn according to traditional principles such as compactness, contiguity, and the preservation of communities of interest. The emphasis should not be on engineered racial majorities that treat voters as mere demographic components.

Demanding race-based districts while simultaneously opposing basic election security measures is seen as undermining public confidence and contradicting the organization’s own historical stance.

SUPREME COURT CASE EXPOSES LIBERAL CONTRADICTIONS ON RACE AND SEGREGATION

Established in 1909 in response to the brutal violence of lynchings and the Springfield race riot, the NAACP brought together Black and White Americans to combat violence, segregation, and disenfranchisement. Its legal strategies led to monumental victories, including landmark cases like *Brown v. Board of Education* and the passage of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act. The organization’s focus was on equality, not on perpetuating racial grievances.

However, over the past fifty years, the NAACP has increasingly been perceived as aligning with the liberal political agenda. The consequences observed in Black urban communities—such as family breakdown, underperforming schools, and persistent poverty—are cited as evidence of this shift. By prioritizing partisan political maneuvers over universal principles, the organization is seen as having diminished its credibility as an impartial mediator.

This “Out of Bounds” initiative is described as a new low, transforming college football—an arena where talent and hard work are meant to transcend race—into a racially charged endeavor aimed at financial gain. Black athletes generate billions in revenue for major college football programs. The threat of boycotts to achieve political concessions is viewed as treating these athletes as mere pawns rather than individuals striving for excellence.

This tactic is seen as echoing the very racial intimidation that the original NAACP fought against, now being applied in a context where race is supposedly irrelevant to the athletic endeavor.

College football, it is argued, should serve as a unifying force, not a divisive one. It provides young men from diverse backgrounds with opportunities for discipline, education, and personal growth. Involving it in redistricting disputes is considered a disservice to the athletes, the fans, and the broader cause of genuine equality.

The NAACP is urged to do better for its members, its history, and the nation. The call is for a return to the founding principles of 1909: equal justice, not manufactured outcomes. The author advocates for an end to the politicization of sports and a renewed focus on addressing the real barriers to opportunity, such as family structure, education, and cultural issues, rather than scapegoating electoral maps in red states while overlooking partisan maneuvering in blue states.

The author concludes by stating that America’s most significant civil rights victories were achieved through moral persuasion and universal principles, not through boycotts of Saturday football games. The NAACP’s brand and its hard-won legacy are considered too valuable to be squandered on what is described as a divisive stunt.
