SouthernWorldwide.com – The NBA has rescinded a technical foul that was called on New York Knicks center Mitchell Robinson during Game 2 of the NBA Finals.

The league reviewed the incident, which occurred during the Knicks’ narrow 105-104 victory that extended their series lead to 2-0.

The foul in question happened during a physical exchange between Robinson and San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama near the basket.

While both players were engaged in a battle for position, it was Robinson who was assessed a technical foul. This occurred after Wembanyama raised his hands.

The technical foul was called with 4:56 remaining in the first half. Had it stood, it would have required Karl-Anthony Towns to re-enter the game.

A technical foul typically results in free throws for the opposing team and possession of the ball, which could have significantly impacted the outcome for the Knicks.

However, the Knicks managed to secure another road win, heading back to Madison Square Garden for their first NBA Finals home game since 1999, facing the same Spurs team.

The game was decided on the final possession. Wembanyama committed a turnover and fouled Jalen Brunson, leading to a free throw that proved to be the game-winner.

Wembanyama then missed the final shot attempt, resulting in back-to-back losses for the Spurs.

Robinson was tasked with defending Wembanyama on that crucial final play. Despite having a clear look at the basket, Wembanyama’s shot hit the rim and bounced out.

Devin Vassell secured the rebound for San Antonio, but there was insufficient time left on the clock to attempt another shot, even though his put-back attempt went in.

Robinson played 14 minutes in the game, contributing seven points, three rebounds, one block, and one steal.

He has been playing through the Finals with a surgically repaired pinky finger on his right hand. This injury reportedly occurred at his home just days before the Finals tipped off against the Spurs.

The Knicks had a period of rest after sweeping the Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Robinson plays a vital role for head coach Mike Brown’s team, serving as a key contributor off the bench. He provides valuable rest for Towns and offers strong defense in the paint, along with rebounding and occasional alley-oop finishes.

The Spurs employed a “Hack-A-Mitch” strategy when Towns encountered foul trouble during Game 2, particularly in the second quarter as they attempted to mount a comeback.

By intentionally putting Robinson in the team bonus situation, they aimed to force him to the free-throw line. However, Robinson has historically struggled at the charity stripe, shooting just 32% (16-for-50) in 15 games.

Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson may continue to utilize this tactic if the opportunity arises. Both teams have demonstrated a physical approach throughout the Finals thus far.

Ultimately, the NBA’s decision to overturn the technical foul on Robinson means it did not factor into the Knicks’ crucial victory.
