SouthernWorldwide.com – New York Attorney General Letitia James has officially joined forces with New Jersey Attorney General Jennifer Davenport to initiate a thorough investigation into the surprisingly high ticket prices set by FIFA for the upcoming World Cup. This joint probe was announced on Wednesday, as reported by the New York Post.
Officials have expressed concerns that the exorbitant ticket costs, coupled with what they describe as a “gauntlet of confusion, fake scarcity, and impossibly high prices,” have created significant frustration for fans eager to attend the soccer tournament, which is scheduled to commence next month.
Both Attorney General James and Attorney General Davenport have confirmed the launch of this collaborative inquiry. The investigation involves the issuance of subpoenas to FIFA by the two state officials. The primary focus will be on addressing a multitude of issues that have arisen from FIFA’s ticket sales strategy for the tournament.
These issues include widespread reports that potential attendees have been misled regarding the actual location of their seats, in addition to the remarkably inflated prices being charged for entry. This situation has understandably caused considerable dismay among fans.
“Being honest about ticket sales is not a complicated matter. However, FIFA has transformed the process of purchasing a ticket to the World Cup into a confusing ordeal, characterized by manufactured scarcity and prices that are simply out of reach for many,” stated AG Davenport in an official statement. “This is happening at the direct expense of consumers and hardworking New Jerseyans.”
The decision for both states to conduct a joint investigation is particularly logical when considering the significant role New Jersey will play in hosting the tournament. Several World Cup games, including the highly anticipated final match scheduled for July 19, are slated to be held at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
The issue of sky-high ticket prices for the World Cup appears to be transcending political divides. This joint probe follows closely on the heels of President Donald Trump also voicing his strong disapproval of the elevated ticket costs earlier this month. Rumors have consistently indicated that prices for some tickets were exceeding $1,000.
“I was not aware of that figure,” President Trump remarked when discussing the ticket prices. “I would certainly like to be there to witness the event, but I would not pay that amount either, to be perfectly honest with you.”
