SouthernWorldwide.com – New Jersey’s Democratic governor has announced an additional $12 million in taxpayer funds will be allocated to a legal defense fund aimed at shielding undocumented immigrants from deportation.
Governor Mikie Sherrill stated on social media that the funding for the Detention Deportation Defense Initiative will be increased to a total of $20.2 million.
Additionally, a new program called the Rapid Legal Response Initiative has been launched. This initiative aims to bolster the state’s legal resources for emergency immigration defense, offering free legal counsel to migrants facing removal proceedings within New Jersey.
Governor Sherrill justified this significant financial commitment by asserting it is a measure to safeguard the human rights of individuals residing in the U.S. without legal status.
She explained that these actions are intended to ensure that more individuals within New Jersey’s communities receive fair legal treatment and that more legal professionals in the state are engaged in defending the fundamental human rights of detainees and their families.
This development follows a period of intense clashes between protesters and immigration authorities outside the Delaney Hall detention facility in Newark, which houses undocumented immigrants facing deportation.
New Jersey state police collaborated with federal agencies to help manage the protests earlier in the week.
The recent disruptions to federal immigration enforcement operations involved activists on the far-left creating human blockades at the facility’s entrance, obstructing agents’ access. Reports indicate that some protesters engaged in physical confrontations and directed threats towards law enforcement personnel.
The Department of Homeland Security has confirmed that arrests have been made in connection with these clashes.
Meanwhile, detainees within the facility were reportedly participating in a hunger strike.
Governor Sherrill’s decision to increase funding for the defense of undocumented immigrants has drawn strong criticism from conservative voices.
New Jersey Assemblyman Gerry Scharfenberger expressed his disapproval, calling the allocation of over $20 million for a defense fund for undocumented immigrants “outrageous,” especially given the state’s budget challenges and the high tax burden on New Jersey residents.
Another social media user, identifying as a New Jersey taxpayer, criticized the governor’s spending priorities. The user lamented the use of an additional $12 million for lawyers representing individuals who are in the country unlawfully, suggesting that the funds would be better utilized for improving roads, schools, and addressing property taxes for actual residents of New Jersey.
