SouthernWorldwide.com – New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has expressed his belief that the Democratic Party has strayed from its core mission of supporting working individuals.

During an interview on June 1st with Eugene Daniels of MS NOW, Mamdani highlighted that citizens are keenly interested in tangible solutions for pressing issues such as rent, housing, gas prices, and the cost of groceries. He emphasized the urgency of providing answers and demonstrating concrete actions to address these concerns.

“Do you believe the leadership within the Democratic Party truly grasps this sentiment?” Daniels inquired.

Mamdani responded directly, stating, “I think that the party as a whole has lost its focus on working people. And I’m hopeful that we start to develop that.”

He further elaborated by referencing historical foundations of the party, noting, “You know, you look at the four freedoms, you look at the real core of the New Deal, there was a moment when this party was unabashed about its focus on working people. And I’m excited to bring it back there.”

Mamdani, who identifies with democratic socialist principles, secured victory in the New York City mayoral election last year as the Democratic candidate.

He made a clear declaration during his inauguration speech on January 1, 2026, stating, “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as a democratic socialist.”
