SouthernWorldwide.com – A post-match incident involving French World Cup star Kylian Mbappé and Paraguay’s goalkeeper Orlando Gill occurred on Saturday, following a tense Round of 16 match.
Mbappé, who had scored a penalty in the 70th minute, was celebrating with the crowd at Philadelphia Stadium after France secured a 1-0 victory. As he turned towards the fans, he stepped in front of Gill. The Paraguayan goalkeeper extended his hand for a handshake, but Mbappé appeared to ignore him. In response, Gill threw the ball at Mbappé.
Gill later explained his reaction, stating that he had intended to shake Mbappé’s hand. However, he admitted to losing his temper when Mbappé did not acknowledge him.
The match itself was notably physical, with several instances of aggressive play directed at Mbappé. Paraguay’s strategy seemed to involve a concerted effort to disrupt France’s attack through close marking and physical challenges.
Paraguay midfielder Andrés Cubas notably grabbed Mbappé in the offensive third early in the game, leading to a confrontation in the 35th minute. Later in the first half, Matias Galarza made contact with Mbappé off the ball. In the 77th minute, Juan José Cáceras kicked Mbappé on his right shin.
Interestingly, Paraguay did not receive any yellow cards for these fouls. In contrast, France was shown three yellow cards during the entire match.
Following the game, Mbappé commented on the physicality of the match. He acknowledged that France was prepared for a tough contest and could also “get their hands dirty” and “play ugly football” if necessary. He suggested that Paraguay might have underestimated France’s ability to adapt to such a style of play.
France’s coach, Didier Deschamps, also addressed Paraguay’s tactics. He criticized their physicality, suggesting they employed “every trick in the book.” Deschamps implied that this style of play was not entertaining for spectators. While acknowledging that each team has its own approach, he also mentioned hearing “insults from the other bench” which he found unnecessary.
