SouthernWorldwide.com – Two prominent Democratic congresswomen, Representative Nancy Pelosi and Representative Ilhan Omar, have chosen to remain silent when questioned about the increasing influence of socialist ideology within the Democratic Party, particularly following the significant victories of three candidates endorsed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani in recent primary elections.
Mamdani’s considerable political influence was evident on Tuesday evening. All three of his endorsed candidates for the House of Representatives—Darializa Avila Chevalier, Brad Lander, and Claire Valdez—secured victories in their respective Democratic primaries across New York. These wins came against more moderate Democratic contenders.

While Pelosi, a seasoned congresswoman from California with 20 terms in office, did not formally endorse Mamdani, she has previously supported socialist candidates. Notably, in 2024, she endorsed Dean Preston for supervisor in California’s District 5, a race that featured a socialist candidate.
Pelosi has also publicly stated her opposition to socialism. In a 2019 interview with CBS’ “60 Minutes,” she declared, “I will reject socialism as an economic system.” She further clarified that while individuals might hold such views, they do not represent the broader Democratic Party’s platform.
“If people have that view, that’s their view,” Pelosi stated in the interview. “That is not the view of the Democratic Party.”
Representative Ilhan Omar, a member of the progressive “Squad,” also sidestepped questions regarding the New York primary outcomes. She did not comment on whether the success of these three socialist candidates could present challenges to the legislative agendas of House Democrats and Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries should they be elected to Congress.

Although Omar has not formally identified as a socialist, she has consistently supported policies often associated with socialist platforms. She has also received endorsements from the Democratic Socialists of America.
In contrast to Pelosi and Omar’s reticence, Representative Hank Johnson of Georgia welcomed the newly elected lawmakers. When pressed about criticisms leveled by the three candidates against Israel, Johnson contended that their opposition is directed at the Israeli government, not the nation of Israel itself.
“They were not anti-Israel. They were anti-Israeli government,” Johnson explained. “The government of Benjamin Netanyahu has done a grave disservice to the nation of Israel and to its people.”
Lander, who is Jewish, addressed this point in his victory speech, stating, “You can criticize Israel and not be antisemitic. You can be an anti-Zionist and not be antisemitic.”

All three primary winners have been vocal critics of Israel’s military operations in Gaza. This stance has become a significant dividing line within the progressive wing of the Democratic Party.
Johnson further criticized the relationship between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former President Donald Trump, condemning their roles in initiating the conflict with Iran.
“The people there will have an opportunity to correct the mistake that they made,” Johnson asserted. “The same way that the people of America have the opportunity to correct this mistake that we made in electing Donald Trump, who unfortunately got manipulated into war by Benjamin Netanyahu.”
He added, “People don’t like this war, and they don’t like Israeli government policy that put us into this war.”
