SouthernWorldwide.com – A British man, initially suspected of being murdered after being discovered in a pool of blood, was instead the victim of a tragic accident, officials announced this week.

Robert Brown, 57, was found slumped over a blood-soaked bench on August 1, 2025, in Northampton, England. Authorities at the time believed he had been fatally stabbed.

The initial investigation led to the arrest of three individuals in connection with his death. However, all three were later released as the circumstances surrounding Brown’s demise came under scrutiny.

A coroner officially ruled Brown’s death a “tragic accident” on Thursday. This ruling followed a thorough review of the evidence gathered during the extensive investigation.

Investigators now believe that Brown, who was known to have issues with alcohol dependence, fell into a deep slumber. In his state, he inadvertently put his weight onto his bag, causing a knife within it to pierce his body.

The knife, according to authorities, penetrated the bag and all three layers of Brown’s clothing. This resulted in a severe cut to his arm, leading to him bleeding out while he slept.

Experts at a court hearing explained that Brown’s alcoholism likely made him more vulnerable to significant blood loss, exacerbating the consequences of the accidental injury.

The murder inquiry, initially launched by Northamptonshire Police, was officially dropped in February. At that time, police stated that Brown’s death was likely self-inflicted, noting the absence of any apparent motive for murder.

“We have reviewed the extensive amount of information gathered as part of the investigation, including all forensic submissions, and can confirm the evidence does not support the hypothesis that his death was a homicide,” the police statement read at the time of the inquiry’s closure.
