SouthernWorldwide.com – Qatar’s Assim Madibo has received a five-match suspension from the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a tackle that resulted in a broken leg for Canadian player Ismaël Koné.

The incident occurred during a match where Madibo was shown a red card for a severe tackle. Subsequently, FIFA’s disciplinary committee reviewed the foul play and deemed a significant suspension appropriate.

Although the decision is open to appeal, Qatar’s participation in the current World Cup concluded with a 3-1 defeat against Bosnia and Herzegovina, which eliminated them in the group stages. Madibo was already ineligible to play in that match due to his red card.

The five-game suspension imposed on Madibo will extend beyond the current tournament and apply to future international competitions.

Reports suggest Madibo did not intend to cause such a serious injury. He appeared visibly distressed upon realizing the extent of Koné’s injury, with his hands on his head as Koné lay on the ground, and Canadian players reacting with anger.

Following the match, Madibo visited the Canadian team’s locker room to offer an apology to Koné. This was confirmed by Canada’s head coach, Jesse Marsch, in a statement to The Athletic.

Qatar’s manager, Julen Lopetegui, commented after the game, stating that Madibo was deeply affected by the injury and that the tackle was unintentional. He emphasized that it was a clear accident and wished Koné a speedy recovery.

Images circulated showed Madibo and Koné, who was in a wheelchair, embracing, indicating a lack of animosity despite the severity of the injury.

The match itself was a significant loss for Qatar, as Canada capitalized on having an extra player after Madibo’s red card, ultimately winning 6-0. While a notable victory for Canada, the focus was also on Koné’s crucial role in the team.

Koné underwent successful surgery for a broken tibia and fibula in his left leg.

Canada has since faced Switzerland, losing a closely contested match 2-1. This result saw Switzerland secure victory in Group B, though Canada still advanced to the round of 32 by finishing second in their group.

Canada is now set to compete in Los Angeles against the runner-up of Group A. The outcome of Group A, which features Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, and Czechia, will be determined on Sunday.
