SouthernWorldwide.com – Rick Adelman, a highly respected figure in the NBA known for orchestrating some of the league’s most effective offenses, has passed away at the age of 79.

The National Basketball Coaches Association confirmed his death on Monday, though the specific cause was not immediately revealed.

Adelman’s illustrious coaching career spanned 23 seasons across five NBA franchises: the Portland Trail Blazers, Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings, Houston Rockets, and Minnesota Timberwolves. He amassed an impressive regular-season record of 1,042 wins against 749 losses. His significant contributions to the sport were recognized with his induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in 2021.

Prior to his coaching tenure, Adelman also had a playing career in the NBA, serving as a point guard for seven seasons. He was initially drafted by the San Diego Rockets in 1968.

Taking the helm of the Portland Trail Blazers during the 1988-89 season, Adelman guided a team led by Clyde Drexler to the NBA Finals in both 1990 and 1992, showcasing his strategic prowess.

In 1998, Adelman transitioned to coach the Sacramento Kings. Under his leadership, the Kings consistently reached the playoffs during his eight seasons with the team, notably advancing to the Western Conference Finals in 2002.

NBA Commissioner Adam Silver issued a statement on Monday, paying tribute to Adelman’s enduring legacy.

Silver stated, “Rick Adelman was one of the most respected and accomplished coaches in the history of the NBA.”

He further elaborated, “Following his NBA playing career, Rick turned to coaching where his leadership, innovation and genuine love for basketball left a lasting impression on generations of players and fellow coaches over his nearly 30-year run. He was a brilliant strategist and teacher of the game, and an even better person. I send my deepest condolences to Rick’s family and many friends throughout the league.”

Rick Adelman is survived by his wife of 56 years, Mary Kay, their six children, including Nuggets coach David Adelman, and twelve grandchildren.
