SouthernWorldwide.com – The Republican National Committee (RNC) and the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) have initiated legal action to defend Missouri’s recently established congressional map. This move comes in response to challenges lodged by Democrats.

RNC Chairman Joe Gruters stated that Democrats nationwide are resorting to what he described as “frivolous lawsuits” to maintain their political standing after electoral setbacks. He emphasized the RNC’s commitment to advocating for Missourians’ values against Democratic attempts to manipulate congressional districts through the courts and subvert the will of the voters.

The RNC asserts that the new congressional map, which was enacted by the Missouri General Assembly in the previous year, is fully compliant with the state constitution. However, opponents of the map contest this assertion, arguing in court that the plan contravenes specific provisions within the Missouri Constitution.

NRCC Chairman Richard Hudson commented that the residents of Missouri deserve equitable representation, not a partisan maneuver aimed at silencing voters and overturning a lawfully enacted map. He further stated that the NRCC and RNC are upholding the integrity of the democratic process and defending Missourians’ right to have their voices heard through fairly drawn congressional districts.

This lawsuit emerges as referendum organizers and other critics of the map are pursuing court action concerning petitions that would enable Missouri voters to decide on reinstating the state’s prior congressional map. Republicans contend that the certification of any referendum should be postponed until the state’s signature verification process is finalized.

According to the RNC, certifying the referendum before the completion of the review process could potentially halt the implementation of the new map, even temporarily. The lawsuit aims to allow the review process to proceed unimpeded and ensure that election laws are strictly adhered to before any referendum advances.

The RNC also pointed out that Democrats and affiliated groups have reportedly expended over $6 million in unsuccessful legal challenges against Missouri’s maps. This indicates a significant financial investment in opposing the current redistricting plan.

The legal dispute follows a recent Supreme Court ruling where the court decided, by a 6-3 majority, that Louisiana’s 2024 congressional map, which was redrawn to include a second majority-Black district, constituted an illegal racial gerrymander.

Proponents of the Missouri map argue that this Supreme Court decision reinforces the limitations on using race as a primary factor in congressional redistricting. Conversely, voting-rights advocates and other legal scholars have offered varied interpretations regarding the broader implications of this ruling for future redistricting cases.

The RNC highlighted the Supreme Court’s decision, asserting that it reaffirmed the principle that states cannot predominantly base congressional maps on race. They further contend that state legislatures retain considerable authority to draw districts that reflect the political preferences of their constituents.

Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe signed the new congressional map into law last year. Republicans anticipate that this map could potentially aid the GOP in securing an additional U.S. House seat in the 2026 midterm elections. Critics, however, maintain that the map was intentionally designed to enhance the Republican electoral advantage and diminish the influence of certain communities of interest—allegations that supporters of the map refute.

In a post on Truth Social at the time, President Donald Trump lauded the map, describing it as “FANTASTIC” and predicting it would contribute to sending an additional MAGA Republican to Congress in the 2026 Midterm Elections.
