SouthernWorldwide.com – A promising outfielder for the Oakland Athletics, Ryan Lasko, is currently unable to feel his lower body following a severe collision with a teammate during a Double-A game. The incident, which occurred while Lasko was attempting a catch, resulted in fractured vertebrae that required spinal surgery.
The 24-year-old Lasko, a highly-regarded prospect in the Athletics’ system, was playing center field for the Double-A Midland RockHounds when the accident happened. He dove to make a play on a ball, but his right fielder teammate was also converging on the same ball.
Both players committed fully to the play, but the collision occurred as they landed on the field. Lasko’s teammate, Devin Taylor, was able to recover and retrieve the ball that had rolled away. However, Lasko remained on the ground, indicating a serious injury in what was described as a “pretty ugly crash.”
Following his removal from the field via cart, it was confirmed by MLB.com that Lasko had fractured his C6-C7 vertebra. He subsequently underwent spinal decompression and stabilization surgery and was reported to be in stable condition.
Despite the successful surgery, Lasko is still experiencing a lack of sensation in his lower half due to swelling. This is a significant concern for his recovery and future playing career.
Oakland Athletics manager Mark Kotsay addressed Lasko’s injury on Wednesday, expressing optimism that sensation would return. “There’s hope the feeling comes back,” Kotsay stated, highlighting the team’s concern and desire for his full recovery.
Ryan Lasko is considered one of the Athletics’ top prospects. He entered the current season ranked as the franchise’s No. 18 prospect according to MLB Pipeline. The Athletics drafted him in the second round of the 2023 MLB Draft.
Although he began the current season in Double-A, Lasko had already made an appearance in Triple-A Las Vegas during the previous season, showcasing his progression through the minor league system.
This season, prior to his injury, Lasko had been performing at a decent level. He was slashing .209/.275/.360 at the plate, with six home runs, five triples, and 34 runs batted in. His offensive contributions were a positive aspect of his performance before the unfortunate incident.
