SouthernWorldwide.com – As parents prepare to hand over the car keys to their teenagers, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) and Consumer Reports have released their annual list of the safest vehicles for young drivers. This year’s recommendations cover both new and used cars, focusing on crash protection, braking systems, headlights, and other crucial safety features.
The joint report highlights 96 vehicles deemed safe for teen drivers, considering their overall performance in emergency situations and crash tests. The organizations aim to provide reliable guidance for parents seeking secure transportation for their new drivers.
“We curate this annual list specifically for teens because driving holds extra risk for them,” stated Rebecca Weast, Senior Research Scientist at IIHS, in a press release. This emphasis underscores the unique vulnerabilities associated with new drivers.
The list is divided into several categories, including vehicles with advanced safety features and those that offer robust crash protection at lower price points. This ensures a range of options suitable for different budgets and needs.
The first group features 29 used vehicles priced under $20,000. These cars are equipped with highly-rated headlights and automatic emergency braking systems, key features for preventing accidents. This category is designed for families looking for reliable, budget-friendly options.
A second grouping consists of 45 used cars available for under $10,000. These vehicles provide “good crash protection” for teen drivers, according to IIHS and CR. The model years for these used cars range from 2012 to 2025, offering a broad selection of reliable options.
For those considering a brand-new vehicle, the list also includes approximately two dozen 2026 models. These new cars have undergone the latest crash tests by IIHS and have earned safety recognition from both IIHS and Consumer Reports, ensuring they meet the highest safety standards.
Vehicles were excluded from the rankings if they were deemed to have excessive horsepower relative to their weight or were marketed primarily for performance. This exclusion aims to steer teens away from vehicles that might encourage risky driving behaviors.
Additionally, the ranking omits minicars, which generally do not offer adequate protection in crashes. Large SUVs and large pickup trucks are also excluded because they can be more challenging to handle for inexperienced drivers and pose a greater risk to others on the road.
