SouthernWorldwide.com – Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, D-N.Y., has surprisingly voiced his support for a Republican-led initiative aimed at penalizing lawmakers during future government shutdowns.
The Senate is slated to vote on Wednesday on a resolution introduced by Sen. John Kennedy, R-La. This resolution proposes to halt pay for senators while a government shutdown is in effect.
Republicans are hopeful that this measure will serve as a deterrent, preventing Democrats from initiating shutdowns again in the upcoming fall season.
Schumer, who has guided Democrats through two government shutdowns in the past year, has indicated his intention to vote in favor of the resolution.
“I’m going to vote for it,” Schumer stated. “And I think it has a lot of support.”
Kennedy’s resolution mandates that the Secretary of the Senate must withhold lawmakers’ salaries until a shutdown is successfully resolved. A typical senator’s annual salary stands at $174,000, with party leaders earning over $193,000 annually.
It is important to note that this resolution would exclusively apply to the Senate. Furthermore, its implementation is scheduled to commence only after the November midterm elections.
This timing has raised concerns among some Republicans, who fear that Schumer and the Democrats might engineer another shutdown before voters cast their ballots.
Despite these concerns, the resolution is widely expected to pass, especially with the endorsement from Schumer and Senate Majority Leader John Thune, R-S.D. Thune had previously scheduled the measure for a vote earlier this week.
The passage of this resolution could potentially diminish the inclination of lawmakers to plunge the government into another shutdown in the coming months. This comes at a time when Congress is still grappling with the increasing frequency of government closures and the resulting disruptions.
The most recent partial government shutdown extended for a record 76 days, primarily driven by Democratic demands for significant reforms to the nation’s immigration operations.
In the preceding year, Democrats had also withheld funding for the government for 43 days, in their pursuit of an extension for now-expired Obamacare tax credits.
Republicans are now actively utilizing the budget reconciliation process to address outstanding issues from the previous shutdown. This process aims to secure funding for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Border Patrol for the next three and a half years.
Thune highlighted that this approach was adopted solely due to the Democrats’ refusal to fund these essential agencies. He expressed his hope that Kennedy’s resolution would ultimately prove to be the definitive solution to prevent future government shutdowns.

“And if this — passing this and applying it to senators, maybe it will provide an additional incentive to prevent Senate Democrats in the future from shutting the government down again,” Thune remarked.
