Scottie Scheffler’s Made Cut Streak Ends Before The Open

SouthernWorldwide.com – For years, Scottie Scheffler’s ability to consistently make the cut in golf tournaments was as reliable as death and taxes.

However, that streak came to an end this past Friday.

For the first time since the 2022 FedEx St. Jude Championship, Scheffler failed to make the cut at the Scottish Open, concluding an impressive run of 78 consecutive made cuts.

This streak was the longest on the PGA Tour in recent memory, surpassed only by Tiger Woods, who holds the record with 142 consecutive made cuts from February 1998 to May 2005.

Scheffler finished two shots shy of the cut line, shooting a 2-over 72 on Friday to bring his tournament total to even par.

The 30-year-old golfer was candid about his performance, stating that he got off to a poor start and was unable to get close enough to the hole to create sufficient birdie opportunities.

The cut for the top 65 players and ties was not finalized until the second round concluded.

Scheffler found himself tied for 88th place after missing a 6-foot par putt on the par-3 ninth hole, which moved him back to even par for the tournament at 142 strokes.

Scheffler will be looking to put this disappointment behind him quickly, as he is scheduled to defend his title at The Open Championship next week.

The 154th Open will be held at Birkdale, a course Scheffler has not previously played.

He acknowledged that the upcoming tournament would be different from what he had planned and indicated he would focus on preparing for Birkdale once he arrives.

Scheffler began the day just three strokes behind the leaders but struggled with his putting throughout the round.

He missed a 3 1/2-foot par putt on his second hole, the 11th.

On the par-5 12th, his chip from the high grass to a back pin caught a ridge and rolled into a bunker, resulting in his second consecutive bogey.

It’s worth noting that other prominent golfers have also seen their made cut streaks end recently.

Xander Schauffele’s streak of 72 consecutive made cuts concluded at Torrey Pines in January.

The longest active streak for made cuts on the PGA Tour now belongs to Matt Fitzpatrick, who has made 29 consecutive cuts.
