SouthernWorldwide.com – Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, the standout player for the Oklahoma City Thunder, is reportedly on the verge of achieving a significant milestone in NBA history.

Reports indicate that Gilgeous-Alexander is set to be named the NBA MVP for the 2025-26 season, according to ESPN on Sunday.

This would mark his second consecutive MVP award, placing him in an elite group as the 14th player in NBA history to win the award in back-to-back seasons. He follows in the footsteps of Nikola Jokic, who achieved this feat in the 2020-21 and 2021-22 seasons. Prior to Jokic, Giannis Antetokounmpo of the Milwaukee Bucks also secured consecutive MVP titles.

The finalists for this year’s award included the Denver Nuggets star Nikola Jokic and the San Antonio Spurs’ sensation Victor Wembanyama.

Gilgeous-Alexander, coming off an NBA championship win last season, led his team to the top of the league once again in the 2025-26 season. He guided the Thunder to the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Over 68 games, he posted impressive averages of 31.1 points, 6.6 assists, and 4.3 rebounds.

In addition to his MVP contention, he was also recognized as the Clutch Player of the Year.

Both Jokic and Wembanyama had exceptional seasons that could have easily led them to MVP honors.

Jokic maintained his dominance by averaging a triple-double for the second consecutive year, with 27.7 points, 12.9 rebounds, and 10.7 assists per game.

Wembanyama demonstrated a strong comeback after a blood clot sidelined him for the latter half of the previous season. He averaged 25 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks per game. The Spurs, who finished last season with a 34-48 record, secured the second seed in the Western Conference this year.
