SouthernWorldwide.com – Senator Shelley Moore Capito, a Republican from West Virginia, has significantly advanced her re-election prospects, a feat bolstered by the crucial support of President Donald Trump.
Capito decisively overcame five Republican opponents in the Tuesday GOP Senate primary, as reported by the Associated Press. This victory secures her party’s nomination in the predominantly Republican state of West Virginia, often referred to as the Mountain State.
The two-term senator has a long history in public service. Before her election to the Senate in 2014, she served for fifteen years in the House of Representatives. She also made history as the first female senator from West Virginia. Her political lineage is notable, as her late father, Arch Moore Jr., was a former governor of West Virginia, serving three terms, and a six-term congressman.
Among the challengers vying to unseat her in the primary was state Senator Tom Willis. Willis had advocated for a change in leadership, criticizing “career politicians.”
However, Capito strategically highlighted her endorsement from President Trump during her re-nomination campaign.
“I am honored to have President Trump’s complete and total endorsement as we fight to protect West Virginia jobs, make life more affordable, secure our border, and defend our shared values in the Mountain State,” she stated last month.
On Tuesday, she reinforced this message on the social media platform X, writing, “Proud to lead President Trump’s ticket in West Virginia today.”
The National Republican Senatorial Committee, which supports Capito, celebrated her primary win on X, asserting that the senator “is ready to keep fighting alongside President Trump to put West Virginia FIRST!”
President Trump himself took to social media to acknowledge Capito’s victory and reiterate his endorsement.
In a statement following her win, Capito declared, “West Virginia Republicans sent a clear message that we are ready to continue delivering wins with America First policies through my strong leadership in the U.S. Senate.”
West Virginia, historically a Democratic stronghold, has transitioned to a strongly Republican state. President Trump secured a significant victory in the state during the 2024 presidential election, winning by over 40 points.
Capito is now widely expected to be the favored candidate in the November midterm elections. Nonpartisan political analysts categorize the race as solidly Republican.
Currently, the Republican Party holds a majority in the Senate, with 53 seats compared to the Democrats’ 47.

On the Democratic side, former Morgantown city council member Rachel Fetty Anderson emerged victorious over four other candidates to secure the Democratic Senate nomination, according to the Associated Press.
