SouthernWorldwide.com – Spotify has taken down streams of a song that unexpectedly climbed to the number one position on its charts. This action was prompted by the discovery of suspicious bets placed on the prediction market Kalshi concerning the music track.

The song, titled “Earrings” and performed by musician Malcolm Todd, experienced a remarkable 70% surge in streams overnight on Sunday. This dramatic increase propelled it to the top of Spotify’s U.S. streaming chart, as initially reported by the Financial Times.

Spotify confirmed on Wednesday that it had removed the streams for the song. The music streaming giant stated its belief that these streams did not originate from genuine listeners.

“All streaming services encounter evolving forms of stream manipulation. Spotify possesses industry-leading detection and mitigation strategies for manipulated streams, and we do not disburse associated royalties,” a Spotify representative conveyed in a statement to CBS News.

A spokesperson for Kalshi informed CBS News that the company is currently in communication with Spotify and is actively investigating the situation. The prediction market platform is cooperating with Spotify’s inquiry.

This incident amplifies existing concerns regarding the adequacy of safeguards on prediction markets like Kalshi and Polymarket. Critics worry that these platforms may lack sufficient measures to prevent market manipulation or the exploitation of non-public information. There is a concern that individuals with insider knowledge or the capacity to influence an event’s outcome could potentially profit unfairly from these markets.

Earlier this year, in January, a bet on the capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro raised significant questions about the integrity of such platforms. The bet was notably well-timed, coinciding with the actual capture. A U.S. special forces soldier who was part of the military operation that led to Maduro’s apprehension later pleaded not guilty to charges. These charges alleged that he used classified information about the mission to place the bet.

The Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), a federal regulatory agency, holds the responsibility for overseeing prediction markets. These markets have successfully attracted billions of dollars in venture capital funding, highlighting their growing influence and economic significance.
