SouthernWorldwide.com – A suspect was apprehended and deemed “neutralized” on Monday following a shooting incident in Montreal that resulted in the deaths of a police officer and one other individual.
The Montreal Police confirmed the tragic loss on the social media platform X. “It is with immense sadness that we confirm the death of one of our police officers in the line of duty. Further details will follow,” the statement read.
A second officer, a female, sustained critical injuries during the event and is currently receiving medical attention.
Authorities issued an alert around 12:30 p.m., urging residents in the Côte-des-Neiges area to seek shelter indoors. This directive was due to the presence of an “armed and dangerous suspect” in the neighborhood.
“If you are in the affected area, shelter indoors, lock the doors, stay away from windows and follow instructions of local authorities,” the alert explicitly advised the public.
Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada indicated she was closely monitoring the developing situation, as reported by the CBC. She expressed her profound sympathies to those affected by the violence.
“My deepest condolences to the family, loved ones, and colleagues of the police officer who died in the line of duty in Côte-des-Neiges,” the mayor stated. “My thoughts are also with all those affected by this tragedy. We are closely following the evolution of the situation and ask the public to respect the instructions of the SPVM.”
Details concerning the alleged gunman, including their identity or the motive behind the shooting, have not yet been publicly disclosed by officials.
Brandon Elkaim, a resident living near the scene of the shooting, shared his shock at the occurrence of such violence in his neighborhood. He recounted the sounds of gunfire.
“It was about 10 or 12, what we now know, were shots in a row,” Elkaim told CTV News. “About 10 minutes went by of quiet but in that time, we saw the park completely empty out, parents and kids running in a panic.”
