This statement comes amidst reports that Apple may soon raise prices for its phones and laptops due to challenges in the processing chip supply chain.
Ocasio-Cortez expressed her view that many of these corporations have become excessively large and that stronger consumer protections are necessary. Her remarks highlight the ongoing discussions among lawmakers regarding the implications of the artificial intelligence (AI) race.

She stated that these major companies often act as if they are governments themselves, seeking to wield unchecked power. This sentiment arises as Apple’s outgoing CEO, Tim Cook, recently indicated that the company might be compelled to pass on rising costs to consumers.
Cook acknowledged that price increases are becoming unavoidable. He mentioned the company’s efforts to mitigate significant cost hikes being passed to them and to shield customers, but stated the situation has become unsustainable.
For years, companies like Apple have been major consumers in the processing chip market. These chips are crucial components that function as the “brain” of electronic devices, enabling them to perform calculations, process data, and execute commands.
The escalating demand from AI companies has intensified competition for a limited supply of these processors, thereby increasing Apple’s operational costs. Ocasio-Cortez believes it is time for Congress to re-evaluate measures to mitigate the costs associated with the AI race at a local level.
She specifically pointed to the energy demands of data centers as an area lawmakers should address. When asked about potential legislation beyond the Creating Helpful Incentives to Produce Semiconductors (CHIPS) Act, President Joe Biden’s technology investment bill enacted in 2022, Ocasio-Cortez suggested further action is needed.
She explained that the CHIPS Act was formulated before the significant advancements in AI and the widespread emergence of data centers. Therefore, it was not designed to account for the massive supply of resources these centers consume.
The CHIPS Act included provisions such as $11.2 billion for modernizing the nation’s energy grid, initiatives for clean energy innovation, and $39 billion in incentives for domestic semiconductor production. However, it did not directly address the energy consumption strain caused by data centers.
Ocasio-Cortez asserted that the government is currently subsidizing many aspects of these AI data centers, suggesting a need for a more comprehensive approach to the energy implications of this technological expansion.
