The Unexpected Cheapest City for a Cheeseburger Combo

SouthernWorldwide.com – The classic American comfort meal of a cheeseburger, fries, and a soda can vary significantly in price depending on a person’s location, according to a new report utilizing the “Cheeseburger Index.”

A recent DoorDash “State of Local Commerce” report analyzed the average cost of this popular combo across various U.S. cities. The findings revealed that Austin, Texas, offers the most affordable option, with the meal averaging $12.94.

According to DoorDash, cities in the South and Southeast generally exhibit lower prices. This trend is attributed to structurally lower operating expenses in these regions, which positively impacts both grocery and restaurant price indexes.

In stark contrast, Anchorage, Alaska, was identified as the most expensive city for the same meal, with prices reaching $28.28, as indicated by the report.

The study highlights that the ten cities offering the best value are predominantly located in the Midwest and Texas. Four Texan cities made the top list: Laredo ($13.39), followed by Lincoln, Nebraska ($13.86), Detroit ($14.99), and Philadelphia ($15.41) rounding out the top five most affordable locations.

These price comparisons emerge at a time when dining out continues to become more expensive, even as prices for many basic grocery items and household staples have shown signs of stabilization.

The DoorDash report indicated that the average price for a cheeseburger, fries, and a soda has increased by 3.2% over the past year.

While surging beef prices have been a prominent topic of discussion, DoorDash suggests that the elevated prices in restaurants are more indicative of broader operational costs. These include expenses related to labor, rent, and energy, rather than solely food costs.

Factors such as local labor markets and operational expenditures also contribute to the significant price difference observed between cities like Austin, where the meal costs under $13, and Anchorage, where it more than doubles that price.

DoorDash’s representative explained that the Cheeseburger Index was developed to illustrate how these localized economic factors directly influence consumer prices for everyday items.

“The main takeaway here is the variation by location,” stated the representative. “The exact same combination of items – a cheeseburger, fries, and a drink – costs an average of $12.94 in Austin, Texas, but jumps to $28.28 in Anchorage, Alaska. It’s the same meal, purchased during the same period, but reflects vastly different local economic conditions.”

The Cheeseburger Index is one of three different affordability metrics featured in the State of Local Commerce Report. DoorDash also presents a Breakfast Basics Index, which tracks the cost of typical breakfast items, and an Everyday Essentials Index, designed to measure the prices of common household staples.

Other sections of the report indicated that prices for many household essentials have remained relatively stable. However, certain grocery items have begun to show an upward trend once again.

For instance, egg prices, which had previously helped to lower overall grocery costs earlier in the year, have seen a decrease. Conversely, the prices of avocados and milk have increased by 12.4% and 8.3% respectively, when compared to the previous quarter.

“The Cheeseburger Index serves as an excellent method for simplifying complex data into a metric that is straightforward, engaging, and easy for people to relate to,” the representative commented.

“It effectively demonstrates price fluctuations by posing the question: if you were to order this same meal every month, how much would it cost you? This makes it a valuable tool for showcasing changes in prices over time,” they added.
