Three injured in Swiss train station knife attack, ‘Allahu Akbar’ reportedly heard

Zurich Cantonal Police confirmed the arrest of the suspect following the attack, which took place on Thursday morning. The incident occurred at the Winterthur train station.

A witness described hearing the alleged assailant shout “Allahu Akbar” multiple times. The witness stated, “About 30 meters away, I heard a man behind me shout ‘Allahu akbar’ five or six times, very emotionally and agitatedly.”

The police statement detailed that the attack involved a bladed weapon. “Shortly after 8:30 a.m., a man injured three people with a bladed weapon at Winterthur train station,” the Zurich Cantonal Police reported. The suspect, identified as a 31-year-old Swiss national, was taken into custody by law enforcement.

The victims of the attack were identified as Swiss nationals. Their ages were reported as 28, 43, and 52. All three were transported to the hospital for treatment of their injuries.

The motive behind the attack is currently the subject of an ongoing investigation. Authorities have stated, “The motive for the attack is under investigation.”

A coordinated response was initiated at the scene. The press release indicated that multiple agencies were involved in the operation. “Together with the Zurich cantonal police, the Winterthur city police, the SBB transport police, the rescue service of the Winterthur cantonal hospital and Zurich protection & rescue were deployed,” the statement read. Further details were expected to be released later that afternoon.
