The individual, identified by British media as a 30-year-old visitor from New Zealand, was captured on video leaping into the historic fountain while fully clothed, much to the astonishment of onlookers.
A TikTok video documenting the event, which has garnered over 12 million views, shows the tourist walking backward before sprinting towards the fountain and executing a dive into its waters.
The man continued to move within the fountain even as law enforcement officers instructed him to exit, as reported by the publication.
Authorities reportedly imposed a fine of €500, approximately $580, and subsequently banned him from re-entering the site, the outlet further noted.
The Trevi Fountain stands as one of Rome’s most frequented landmarks. It has unfortunately been the scene of recurring incidents where tourists disregard strict regulations and enhanced security measures by entering the water.
This latest transgression swiftly triggered a strong backlash online, with numerous individuals criticizing the tourist’s conduct as profoundly disrespectful.
