Trump and Netanyahu’s ‘rift’ concealed a united front against Iran, analyst claims

SouthernWorldwide.com – A public display of friction between then-President Trump and Prime Minister Netanyahu, which seemed to suggest a diplomatic rift, was actually a calculated strategy to create a unified front against Iran, according to an analyst.

This strategic maneuvering, which projected American diplomatic patience while seemingly sidelining Jerusalem, was designed to lay the groundwork for a coordinated approach, explained Kobi Michael, a senior researcher at the Institute for National Security Studies (INSS) and the Misgav Institute.

The culmination of this strategy was a synchronized announcement over the weekend, where both Trump and Netanyahu showcased complete alignment by Sunday, Michael suggested.

Reports from Axios on Thursday indicated a challenging phone call between the leaders. The discussion reportedly centered on a revised U.S. proposal sent to Iran through Pakistan. Netanyahu, according to the report, rejected this proposal, favoring a renewed military approach to degrade Tehran’s infrastructure.

One U.S. source described Netanyahu’s reaction to the exchange as having his “hair on fire,” highlighting the perceived intensity of the disagreement.

Further reports over the weekend suggested that Israeli leaders were being excluded from U.S.-Iran negotiations. This followed Netanyahu’s pre-war advocacy for a joint campaign to overthrow the Iranian regime, which did not materialize.

Prime Minister Netanyahu broke his silence on Sunday, posting on X (formerly Twitter) to express unwavering solidarity with the White House and project a unified stance.

“The partnership between us and our two countries has been proven on the battlefield and has never been stronger,” Netanyahu stated on X. “My policy, like President Trump’s, remains unchanged: Iran will not have nuclear weapons.”

Michael interpreted the public friction and the targeted leaks as a deliberate tactical deception aimed at keeping Tehran off balance.

“Neither President Trump nor Prime Minister Netanyahu has any interest in any crisis, but by leaking the story of a crisis between Trump and Netanyahu, the Iranians might find themselves surprised by the timing of the next military attack,” Michael explained.

He further elaborated that “The leak created a sense of disagreement between the two leaders and positions Trump as the leader who gives another chance to the diplomatic path despite the pressures of Prime Minister Netanyahu.” Michael added, “Trump understands who the Iranians are.”

This final synchronization occurred after a weekend phone call where Trump reportedly reassured Netanyahu that any final agreement with Iran would ensure the complete dismantling of Tehran’s nuclear program.

Netanyahu also stated that Trump “reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself against threats on every front, including Lebanon.”

Washington has been keeping Jerusalem informed about the negotiations concerning “a memorandum of understanding to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and enter negotiations toward a final agreement on the points that remain in dispute,” according to an official statement.

Following the Sunday call, Netanyahu conveyed his gratitude to Trump for his “exceptional commitment to Israel’s security.”

“Netanyahu’s last post about his last conversation with Trump can be understood as the ultimate closure to this deception and any accusations,” Michael commented.

He suggested that this was an effort “to prepare the Israeli public for the idea that everything was fully coordinated with the U.S., and the diplomatic developments will serve the Israeli interest.”

However, Michael noted that skepticism persisted in Jerusalem regarding whether the gaps between the U.S. and Iran would be bridged, or if “Trump will accept the Iranian position.”
