SouthernWorldwide.com – President Trump announced on Friday that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to a prisoner exchange involving 1,000 individuals, coinciding with a three-day ceasefire. This truce is intended to mark Russia’s Victory Day, which falls this weekend.
Both Russia and Ukraine had previously declared separate ceasefires on different dates, leading to some ambiguity regarding the exact timeline. President Trump stated that the temporary ceasefire would halt all military activities from Saturday through Monday. However, Russia and Ukraine have yet to officially confirm this agreement.
In a post on Truth Social, the U.S. President revealed that he initiated the request for this temporary ceasefire. He expressed his appreciation for the agreement reached by Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“Hopefully, it is the beginning of the end of a very long, deadly, and hard fought War,” Trump wrote, referring to the ongoing conflict that has now surpassed four years. He added, “Talks are continuing on ending this Major Conflict, the biggest since World War II, and we are getting closer and closer every day.”
Earlier in the week, President Zelenskyy had announced a ceasefire for May 5-6. Meanwhile, Russia had proposed a ceasefire for May 8-9 the previous week.
