Trump Shows GOP Power, Democrats Eye Midterm Gains in Red State

SouthernWorldwide.com – Former President Donald Trump is demonstrating his significant influence within the Republican Party, while Democrats perceive an opportunity in a key traditionally Republican state during the upcoming midterm elections.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, having secured the Republican Senate nomination by defeating incumbent Senator John Cornyn, attributed his victory to the eleventh-hour endorsement from President Donald Trump.

The powerful impact of Trump’s endorsement and his strong hold over the Republican Party was evident once again in the Texas contest. However, this assertive approach might create challenges as the party aims to maintain its narrow majorities in the House and Senate in November.

This is particularly relevant in Texas, where Paxton is now set to face state Representative James Talarico, a rising figure in the Democratic Party, in the general election. This race is one of several that could determine whether Republicans retain their 53-47 majority in the Senate.

The primary focus on Tuesday night was Trump’s successful exertion of political power against Republicans who opposed him, and the testing of his endorsements in Republican nomination races.

This strategy was showcased three weeks after Trump’s successful efforts to unseat five state senators in Indiana who opposed his redistricting proposals. This followed an earlier push by Trump to remove Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana, who had voted to convict Trump in his second impeachment trial.

Earlier this month, Trump also played a role in the defeat of Representative Tom Massie of Kentucky, a vocal critic of Trump, in his re-election bid.

After remaining neutral for months in the lengthy Cornyn-Paxton race, which set a record for the most expensive Senate primary in the nation’s history, Trump issued a late endorsement of Paxton.

“Ken is a true MAGA Warrior who has ALWAYS delivered for Texas, and will continue to do so in the United States Senate,” Trump stated in a social media post just a week before the Texas election.

Trump also commented on Senator John Cornyn, stating, “John Cornyn is a good man, and I worked well with him, but he was not supportive of me when times were tough.”

Addressing the senator’s past criticisms of him, Trump added, “John was very late in backing me in what turned out to be a Historic Run for the Republican Nomination, and then, the Presidency.”

Senator Cornyn, who had the support of Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee, consistently argued that if Paxton became the GOP nominee, the party would need to spend millions to defend the seat and that this would negatively impact other Republican candidates down the ballot.

This concern stems from Paxton’s history of scandals and legal issues that have plagued him over the last decade, which Democrats are expected to leverage in the general election. In 2023, the Texas House of Representatives impeached Paxton, but he was later acquitted by the state Senate.

Paxton is also currently involved in a contentious divorce, with his wife filing for divorce last year citing “biblical grounds” based on “recent discoveries.”

“He’s gotten more and more emboldened as he’s gotten away with all the scandal and mischief that now is very well known, but were he to be the nominee and be exposed to general election voters, especially independents, I think it’s going to be a very rocky time,” Cornyn predicted.

Highlighting Talarico’s impressive fundraising of $27 million in the first quarter of the year, the Texas senator remarked, “There will be an incredible tsunami of Democratic funds coming in against Paxton, were he the nominee. Conversely… if I am the nominee… we’ll be able to shoulder the burden pretty much on our own. I won my last general election by 10 points. I think I can do similarly against somebody who’s as far left and radical as James Talarico.”

The Talarico campaign quickly responded to Paxton’s victory by posting his mug shot on social media, stating: “He was indicted on 3 felony counts for investment fraud. He was reported to the FBI by his own staff for bribery. He was impeached by his own party for corruption.”

“Now he’s the Republican nominee for US Senate in Texas. Together we will stop him,” the Talarico campaign vowed.

Public opinion polls suggest a highly competitive race between Paxton and Talarico, as Talarico aims to become the first Democrat in nearly four decades to win a U.S. Senate seat in Texas.

Democrats view Paxton’s victory as a significant advantage.

Some Republicans are concerned that Trump’s intervention in key GOP Senate primaries could mirror the outcomes of 2022. In that election cycle, Trump’s favored candidates, including Herschel Walker in Georgia, ultimately lost in the midterms, preventing Republicans from regaining control of the Senate.

“Trump got his way in most of the primaries in 2022 also. Didn’t portend great results in the general election,” commented Sarah Longwell, a vocal Trump critic and GOP consultant, on social media.

Regarding the current midterm elections, with the GOP as the party in power facing traditional challenges and a difficult political landscape, Ryan noted, “That’s the situation Republicans find themselves dealing with heading into what should be a challenging midterm election.”

However, Williams emphasized, “The Republican Party is Trump’s party, and if you cross him, he’ll hit back at you ten times as hard and defeat you. He’s getting better at this as time goes on. His grip on the party has increased, not decreased.”

“Anybody at this point who doesn’t understand this will be out of a job if they cross the president,” he added.
