SouthernWorldwide.com – President Trump has announced his intention to temporarily suspend the federal gasoline tax, aiming to provide relief as fuel prices have surged.

In an exclusive interview with CBS News, President Trump stated his plan to remove the gas tax “for a period of time” and reintroduce it once prices decrease.

The federal excise taxes in question are 18.4 cents per gallon for gasoline and 24.4 cents per gallon for diesel fuel. Implementing such a suspension would require an act of Congress, and lawmakers have thus far shown limited inclination to pursue this measure as a means of lowering costs.

Gasoline prices have experienced a significant increase, rising by over 50% since the commencement of the Iran war on February 28. On Sunday, prices reached a peak of over $4.52 per gallon, according to data from AAA.

“And yep, we’re going to take off the gas tax for a period of time, and when gas goes down, we’ll let it phase back in,” the president remarked during the interview. “But no, we’re gonna, we’ll, we’ll be doing something on that. Yes.”

Analysts suggest that fuel prices are likely to remain elevated due to Iran’s actions in blocking access to the Strait of Hormuz.

Regarding Iran’s recent response to a U.S. peace proposal, President Trump indicated that while concessions were made concerning their nuclear program, they were “not enough.” He characterized the proposal as “very stupid.”

The President also addressed comments made by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on “60 Minutes,” where Netanyahu stated that “nobody had perfect foresight” regarding the Strait of Hormuz. President Trump asserted his own foresight, saying, “I did. I knew they closed it. That’s the only weapon they have.”

He further suggested that the United States could have reopened the Strait under “Project Freedom,” a military operation designed to escort ships through the vital waterway. Trump added that this operation could be resumed and would be conducted with “much more severe” measures.
