SouthernWorldwide.com – Alex Mealer, a combat veteran of the U.S. Army and an energy executive who received the endorsement of President Donald Trump, is now one step closer to securing a seat in the House of Representatives.

Mealer emerged victorious over state Representative Briscoe Cain, R-Texas, in a Republican primary runoff election for a congressional district based in Houston on Tuesday, as reported by The Associated Press.

This contest in a reliably Republican district served as another crucial test of President Trump’s endorsement influence. This influence has demonstrably played a decisive role in numerous high-profile races throughout the current year.

President Trump publicly endorsed Mealer shortly before the initial round of voting in March. In that first round, Mealer secured the highest number of votes, garnering 36% of the total vote.

Mealer also benefited significantly from the support of the conservative organization Club for Growth. This group is consistently among the most substantial financial contributors in Republican primaries. Additionally, Representative Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, lent his support to Mealer’s campaign.

As Mealer did not achieve an outright majority in the initial vote, the race proceeded to a runoff election. Her opponent in this runoff is Cain, who secured the second-highest vote count with 31%.

Cain has been a member of the Texas House of Representatives since 2017. He received an endorsement from Texas Governor Greg Abbott, R-Texas. Cain is recognized as one of the most conservative members within the state legislature. He has actively promoted endorsements from organizations such as the National Rifle Association (NRA), Concerned Women for America, Young Republicans of Texas, and the Texas Homeschool Coalition PAC, among other groups aligned with the Republican party.

The Republican candidate who wins this primary will advance to face environmental activist Leticia Gutierrez in the general election.

This newly redrawn congressional seat is widely anticipated to shift to Republican control. The Cook Political Report has classified the district as noncompetitive. Projections indicate that Trump would have secured nearly a 20-point victory in this district in 2024.

Republicans undertook a redrawing of this district’s boundaries last year, which had previously leaned heavily Democratic. This redistricting effort, orchestrated by the GOP, effectively removed Representative Al Green, D-Texas, from the district he had represented for over two decades.

In response to the redistricting, Green ultimately decided to challenge Representative Christian Menefee, D-Texas, for Houston’s sole Democratic seat. This contest also proceeded to a runoff election on Tuesday.

In 2022, Mealer narrowly lost her bid for Harris County Judge to Judge Lina Hidalgo. Notably, she also received President Trump’s endorsement during that previous campaign.
