Trump’s Georgia gubernatorial candidate faces billionaire Jackson in GOP runoff

SouthernWorldwide.com – Donald Trump’s endorsement was not sufficient to secure an outright victory for Georgia Lt. Gov. Burt Jones in the Republican primary race to succeed the term-limited conservative Governor Brian Kemp.

However, the president’s backing did propel Jones to a runoff in the contest for the GOP nomination in the pivotal southeastern battleground state.

Jones and healthcare executive and billionaire businessman Rick Jackson emerged as the top two finishers in Tuesday’s GOP gubernatorial primary in Georgia, according to the Associated Press. As no candidate secured over 50% of the vote for a majority, Jones and Jackson are now set to compete in a runoff on June 16.

The field of eight Republican candidates also included prominent figures such as state Attorney General Chris Carr and Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger.

Jones, who has a background as a former captain of the University of Georgia football team, an oil executive, and heir to the Jones Petroleum Company, previously served as a state senator before his election as lieutenant governor in 2022. A staunch supporter of Donald Trump, he received the president’s endorsement in August of the previous year.

Highlighting his connection to Trump, Jones stated, “He and I have a long-standing relationship – a friendship – and I’ve always been a big supporter of his, and he’s a very big supporter of mine, as well.”

Jackson, who launched his gubernatorial campaign in February and has invested over $80 million of his personal funds into his bid, has indicated that Trump served as an inspiration for his decision to run.

Rick Jackson was largely unknown to Georgia voters just a few months ago. However, through a significant advertising blitz, his narrative of building a business empire despite a challenging upbringing in foster care and being unable to afford higher education is now widely recognized across the Peach State.

Furthermore, Jackson is positioning himself as an outsider candidate.

“I’m confident that at the end of the day, the people are going to vote for me one way or the other, because they can see somebody that’s actually like Trump, not just endorsed. And from that standpoint, I think having an outsider is what our people want,” he remarked.

Conversely, Jones has raised questions about his rival’s purported support for the former president. He pointed to Jackson’s past contributions to Democrats and anti-Trump Republicans as evidence of his departure from the MAGA wing of the party.

“He’s been dishonest about who he is. He’s been dishonest about who he’s supported in the background,” Jones asserted. “He’s actually, you know, portraying himself as something that he’s not.”

Jackson has dismissed the attacks against him as “just lies” and, referring to Trump, added, “I’m going to be his favorite governor.”
