SouthernWorldwide.com – Janelle Stelson, a former longtime anchor for the NBC affiliate in Lancaster, has won the Democratic primary in a key Pennsylvania district, positioning herself to challenge one of the more vulnerable Republicans in the House of Representatives.

Stelson defeated Dauphin County Commissioner Justin Douglas in a closely watched contest. The winner will face Scott Perry, a stalwart of the Freedom Caucus.

Perry, who hails from Dillsburg, has a history of taking reliably conservative stances on most issues. He chaired the Freedom Caucus in 2022 and was an ally of Elon Musk’s DOGE endeavor. However, he narrowly retained his seat in 2024, defeating Stelson by just a few thousand votes.

During the primary campaign, Stelson faced criticism regarding her residency. Reports indicated that she retained her residence in Lancaster, which falls within Rep. Lloyd Smucker’s district, while campaigning in Perry’s district. Perry’s district encompasses a significant portion of the area covered by Stelson’s former news station.

According to the York Daily Record, which reported on the residency controversy, Stelson moved to a rental property in East Pennsboro Township in August 2025. This township is located across the Susquehanna River from Harrisburg.

Further complicating Stelson’s primary challenge, Douglas reportedly criticized her for the lack of primary debates held during the election cycle.

Local reports also revealed that Stelson was a registered Republican for a considerable period before changing her party affiliation. This shift occurred sometime during the Trump era.

While Stelson has garnered the support of Governor Josh Shapiro, she acknowledged in an interview with ABC-Harrisburg that she holds differing views from some within her party on specific issues.

Regarding the border crisis, Stelson expressed strong opposition to President Joe Biden’s handling of the situation. She stated that the border was “quickly becoming more of a mess than usual.”

However, she also indicated that President Donald Trump’s approach to the crisis had gone “a bridge too far.”

In addition to her views on border policy, Stelson told the outlet that she would support repealing Trump’s tariffs. She also affirmed her pro-choice stance on reproductive rights.

Meanwhile, Scott Perry has consistently held his congressional seat, though the ease with which he has done so has varied over time. His district has seen an influx of moderate-to-progressive voters in the southern suburbs of Harrisburg, such as Camp Hill and Lower Allen.
