SouthernWorldwide.com – The United States Army has achieved its recruitment targets for 2026 four months ahead of schedule, a significant accomplishment announced by Secretary of War Pete Hegseth during the commencement ceremony at the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York.
Hegseth shared the positive news, stating that recruitments are on the rise across all branches of the joint force. This early achievement marks a second consecutive year of exceeding recruitment goals, underscoring a renewed interest in military service.
The Army had set a goal of 61,000 recruits for 2025 and surpassed it, enlisting 62,050 individuals, according to official Pentagon data. This momentum has now led to the 2026 goals being met well in advance.
Command Sgt. Maj. Danny Basham of the United States Army Recruiting Division emphasized the commitment of those choosing to serve. He highlighted that these individuals are demonstrating a dedication to a cause greater than themselves, a quality essential for national security.
During his address, Secretary Hegseth also took the opportunity to critique past military policies. He specifically called out a previous focus on diversity goals and what he described as “anti-American ideologies” that had infiltrated military institutions.
Hegseth expressed his strong disapproval of the embrace of diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives, particularly the inclusion of studies that promoted ideologies he deemed anti-American. He asserted that West Point, as a premier institution, should be above such political influences and that success should be solely based on merit and performance.
He specifically targeted the phrase “Our diversity is our strength,” calling it the “single dumbest phrase in military history.” Hegseth argued that while such concepts might be debated in academic settings, they are detrimental and dangerous within military formations where lives are at stake.
Instead of diversity, Hegseth proposed that “unity is our strength,” a statement that was met with applause from the audience. He stressed that in the context of combat, unity of purpose and action are paramount.
The Secretary of War then turned his attention to the graduating cadets, acknowledging the challenging and dangerous world they are entering. He painted a vivid picture of the realities of high-intensity conflict, emphasizing the pain, agony, sickness, and human tragedy that accompany it.
Hegseth reinforced the mission of the War Department to cultivate warriors who are “purpose built.” These soldiers are not trained for ideal conditions but are prepared to deploy rapidly, under any circumstances, to confront those who threaten the nation and its citizens, delivering justice through close combat.
He distinguished the American military’s motivation, stating, “We fight because we love what’s behind us. Our family, our freedom and our flag.” Hegseth underscored that combat is the ultimate test, where performance is critical, and that the nation’s best individuals must excel in these situations.
The speech also included a strong emphasis on faith, with Hegseth quoting Isaiah 6:8: “Then I heard the voice of the Lord saying, ‘Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?’ And I said, ‘Here I am! Send me.'” He described this as the “timeless, selfless call to service.”
Invoking the words of Charlie Kirk, Hegseth advised the cadets to seek God in all circumstances, reminding them that “this too shall pass,” referring to both good and bad times. He cautioned against overconfidence or excessive self-criticism.
Hegseth’s remarks were made against the backdrop of ongoing international tensions, with the U.S. considering renewed military actions against Iran. He detailed the recent demands placed on the U.S. military, specifically mentioning Operation Epic Fury.
He highlighted the deployment of airborne and rapid reaction forces to the Middle East to protect American bases and lives from Iranian proxies. Hegseth humorously noted the Army’s role in using HIMARS to sink Iranian naval vessels, referencing the friendly rivalry between the Army and the Navy.
