Vatican Excommunicates Bishops Who Defied Pope Leo XIV

SouthernWorldwide.com – In a significant move that marks Pope Leo XIV’s initial major confrontation with a dissenting Catholic faction, the Vatican declared the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) to be in schism and excommunicated bishops who disregarded the pontiff’s authority by consecrating new bishops without his consent.

This decisive action from the Vatican came just one day after the SSPX proceeded with the consecration of four new bishops at their seminary in Écône, Switzerland. This took place despite a direct plea from Pope Leo XIV, urging the group to retract from what the Catholic Church characterized as a “schismatic act.”

A decree issued on Thursday by the Holy See formally excommunicated the four newly consecrated bishops, as well as the two bishops who participated in the ceremony. The ordinations were officially labeled as a schism, signifying a deliberate break from the Catholic Church.

This development follows decades of attempts by various popes to mend relations with the traditionalist movement. The SSPX fundamentally opposes many of the reforms enacted during the Second Vatican Council in the 1960s, including the shift from celebrating Mass in Latin to local languages.

The authority to approve the consecration of Catholic bishops rests solely with the Pope. This practice is crucial for maintaining the Church’s unity and its unbroken line of apostolic succession.

The imposed sanctions also nullify previous concessions granted to the SSPX by the Vatican in recent years, which were intended to reintegrate the group into full communion with Rome. The decree explicitly states that the SSPX can no longer validly administer the sacraments of confession and marriage. The Vatican has also advised Catholics attending SSPX Masses to disassociate themselves from the movement.

This stringent action occurs merely days after Pope Leo XIV made an unusually direct personal appeal to the leader of the SSPX, Father Davide Pagliarani. The Pope implored him to cancel the planned consecrations.

“I plead with you and ask you with all my heart: please turn back!” the Pope wrote in a letter to Pagliarani on Monday. He cautioned that the intended ordinations would exacerbate the long-standing division between Rome and the SSPX.

This contentious issue represents the first significant challenge of Pope Leo XIV’s pontificate. Since assuming the papacy, the American-born pontiff has consistently prioritized fostering unity within the Catholic Church, including extending outreach to conservative and traditionalist elements who felt marginalized during Pope Francis’ papacy.

During the consecration ceremony on Wednesday, Father Pagliarani asserted that the ordinations were performed not in defiance of the Pope, but rather in service to the Church.

“We are accused of not respecting the pope,” Pagliarani stated. “But it is precisely because we love the pope as the vicar of Christ, as the head of the church, that we don’t want to see the pope humiliated anymore, on the side of false shepherds representing false religions.”

The Society of St. Pius X was established in 1970 by French Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre. The SSPX has consistently voiced opposition to what it perceives as theological deviations introduced by the Second Vatican Council. Archbishop Lefebvre himself faced excommunication in 1988 after consecrating four bishops without the endorsement of Pope John Paul II, mirroring the current confrontation.

These excommunications were rescinded in 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI as an overture to restart dialogue. However, the SSPX never re-entered full communion with Rome and has continued to operate outside the formal organizational structure of the Church.

Despite its unofficial status, the society has experienced growth. It now reports hundreds of priests, seminarians, and religious members serving adherents in numerous countries, positioning it as one of the most prominent traditionalist Catholic movements operating independently of Vatican authority.
