Walz’s Trump jab on Reflecting Pool sparks fraud backlash

SouthernWorldwide.com – Minnesota Governor Tim Walz’s recent public criticism of former President Donald Trump regarding the maintenance of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has sparked considerable backlash. Critics have pointed to a significant fraud scandal that occurred in Minnesota during Walz’s tenure as governor.

Walz took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, posting, “Found an imaginary problem, said only they could fix it, didn’t listen to experts, hired buddies who grifted millions, failed miserably, bragged how great it went.” He concluded his statement by saying, “The entire Trump presidency in a nutshell.”

This statement was a reaction to news reports concerning the challenges faced by the Trump administration in cleaning the Reflecting Pool. The issues, including peeling paint and algae growth, emerged shortly after a $14.8 million restoration project. Democrats have recently used these problems as a point of criticism.

While Walz’s post garnered support from some of his allies, it was met with strong criticism from conservatives. They argued that Walz’s own administration’s inability to prevent a large-scale fraud scandal in Minnesota undermines his credibility when commenting on the Reflecting Pool’s issues.

Journalist Mark Hemingway questioned Walz’s stance, posting on X, “I’m sorry, TIM WALZ is accusing someone else of enabling grifting?”

Charles Gasparino, a senior correspondent for Fox Business, commented on X, “From the dude who gave us all those ‘Learing Centers.’”

An account representing over 480 Minnesota state staff members who have reported fraud within the state, Minnesota Staff Fraud Reporting Commentary, directly addressed Walz on X: “Tim Walz: Are you describing yourself?”

Sal Nuzzo, executive director of Consumers Defense, advised Walz to refrain from commenting, posting on X, “Ya might want to sit this one out….”

Former Trump White House spokesman Harrison Fields countered Walz’s characterization of Trump’s presidency. He posted on X, “Actually, the problems were very real: 9% inflation, an open border with 20M+ illegal crossings, fentanyl killing 100K Americans a year, factories shipped overseas, energy dependence, and cities that couldn’t keep the lights on.” Fields added, “Voters didn’t imagine those — they lived them. That’s why you’re a retiring governor and failed VP nominee.”

Conservative influencer Gunther Eagleman accused Walz of being the “biggest fraudster in Minnesota” in a post on X.

Republican Rep. Derrick Van Orden responded to Walz on X, referencing past controversies: “Crazy, you found an imaginary war record.” This comment alluded to questions raised about Walz’s military service history during his 2024 vice presidential campaign.

Former President Trump himself addressed the situation on Truth Social. He stated that out of numerous renovations and cleanups his administration undertook, the Reflecting Pool was the only one “Vandalized.” He claimed it was being addressed “ASAP!”

Trump detailed the alleged vandalism, stating the pool suffered a “300 foot long gash,” chemicals were illegally placed in the water, and the grass field was damaged with an “86 47” carved into it, which he suggested might have been inspired by former FBI Director James Comey.

He concluded his Truth Social post by reminding readers of the 10-year prison sentence for destroying such public property, emphasizing that it “will be fully enforced!”
