Cornyn’s primary contest against Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has reached its climax in today’s runoff election. Following a particularly contentious primary, Cornyn voiced his concerns that Republicans might lose a seat, which would be a significant blow to their efforts to maintain a majority in the Senate.
He expressed his belief that the outcome of this primary runoff could jeopardize the party’s prospects. Cornyn stated that Ken Paxton’s perceived flaws and the “baggage” he carries into the general election would be fully exploited by James Talarico and the Democrats.
The winner of Tuesday night’s runoff will face state Representative James Talarico, a rising star in the Democratic party. Many within the Democratic party believe Talarico has the broad appeal necessary to flip the state, a feat not accomplished in over two decades.
Cornyn highlighted Talarico’s impressive fundraising capabilities, noting the $27 million raised in the first quarter of the year. He predicted that if Paxton wins the primary, a “tsunami of money” would flood into Texas from outside sources to support the Democratic candidate.
Furthermore, Cornyn warned that the potential loss extends beyond just the Senate seat. He asserted that Paxton’s candidacy puts all down-ballot races at risk, including state legislative and local races, such as those for judgeships.
Texas has not elected a Democrat to statewide office since 1994. With President Trump not on the ballot, the Senate race will be the top contest. Cornyn believes he is better positioned to secure a winning margin and help other Republican candidates down the ballot.
He articulated his doubt that the Attorney General could achieve this due to the significant “baggage” he brings, which he believes jeopardizes success across the board.
Paxton has been embroiled in numerous scandals and legal battles over the past decade. In 2023, the Texas House of Representatives voted to impeach him, though he was later acquitted of all charges by the state Senate.
The Attorney General is also navigating a contentious divorce, with his wife citing “biblical grounds” based on “recent discoveries” when filing for divorce last year.
Despite these controversies and Cornyn’s long-standing position within the Republican Party, it is Paxton who has received an endorsement from President Donald Trump.
Trump described Paxton as a “true MAGA Warrior” who has “ALWAYS delivered for Texas” and will continue to do so in the U.S. Senate, according to a social media post.
The former president also acknowledged Cornyn as a “good man” with whom he worked well, but noted that Cornyn was not supportive of him during difficult times. Trump pointed to Cornyn’s past criticism, stating that he was “very late in backing me” during his historic run for the Republican nomination and the presidency.
Paxton, who gained national prominence over the last twelve years by filing lawsuits against the Obama and Biden administrations, offered a differing perspective.
He contended that Senator Cornyn “fought the president’s reelection” and had opposed Trump in 2016 and 2024, suggesting his time had passed. Paxton asserted that Cornyn is not a pro-Trump figure and that their differences on Republican issues are vast.
