SouthernWorldwide.com – The White House has strongly condemned what it terms “targeted sabotage” of the iconic reflecting pool, as necessary repairs are now slated to extend beyond the upcoming July 4th celebrations.
A court document, officially released by the White House, details the National Park Service’s (NPS) intention to drain the reflecting pool once more. This action is planned to facilitate repairs following alleged acts of vandalism.
The document, filed in federal court on Thursday, includes a statement from NPS Deputy Director for Operations, Frank Lands. He reported that on June 9th, U.S. Park Police responded to an incident involving damage to the reflecting pool.
Lands elaborated on the nature of the damage. He stated that caulk, used to seal foam, was cut with a “sharp knife or razor.” Additionally, there was “destruction of delaminating surface material.” Approximately 70 fence post tops were also discovered submerged in the pool.
The NPS’s plan, as outlined by Lands, is to drain the pool to conduct thorough repairs. This will include “assessing and repairing any damage to the lining.” These repair efforts are scheduled to commence immediately after the Independence Day festivities conclude.
This recent damage occurs in the wake of extensive renovations that had been underway on the reflecting pool for over two months. These renovations were initially ordered by President Donald Trump.
Washington, D.C., is bracing for substantial crowds expected for the Independence Day celebrations, which also mark America’s 250th anniversary. The preparations have been further complicated by a series of other incidents.
These incidents include markings of “8647” appearing on the National Mall and a message written in blood on the Washington Monument. The Department of the Interior has cited these events as unfolding across the National Mall.
The administration has previously interpreted the number “86” in these markings as a potential political threat. This interpretation stems from its common use in the restaurant industry to signify the removal or refusal of service. The number 47 is widely understood to refer to Trump as the 47th president.
According to information provided by the White House, a total of seven individuals have been arrested in connection with the alleged vandalism of the reflecting pool. Furthermore, seven other individuals have received federal citations, and eighteen police reports have been officially filed.
Earlier this week, the U.S. Park Police appealed to the public for assistance in identifying a person captured on security camera footage. This footage is related to an ongoing investigation into the damage sustained by the reflecting pool and the alleged destruction of government property in Washington, D.C.
Video footage released by the police appears to show an individual kneeling beside the pool and reaching an arm into the water. The circumstances surrounding this action are under scrutiny.
In a statement released on Thursday, the White House expressed its strong disapproval. The statement asserted that “this isn’t random mischief – it’s targeted sabotage by anti-American crackpots who despise a strong, proud, and beautiful country.”
The White House further characterized the alleged perpetrators as “crazed and deranged lunatics.” These individuals, the statement continued, “have once again exposed their hatred for America with a cowardly, deliberate attack on one of our nation’s most iconic landmarks.”
