Yankees’ Remarkable 13-Run Inning Fueled by Aaron Judge’s Pep Talk

SouthernWorldwide.com – The New York Yankees experienced a remarkable turnaround on Sunday, scoring an impressive 13 runs in a single inning against the Athletics. This offensive explosion was reportedly sparked by a motivational talk from star player Aaron Judge.

Prior to this explosive third inning, the Yankees’ offense had been relatively quiet. Athletics starter Jacob Lopez had retired the first six batters he faced, setting a somewhat subdued tone for the game.

Aaron Judge, a three-time American League MVP, acknowledged that the team needed a wake-up call. He stated that he felt the team was “a little asleep” during the initial innings and expected more from his teammates, who he knew also expected more from themselves.

“A couple of choice words there just to get it going,” Judge commented. “The boys responded,” he added, a statement that proved to be a significant understatement given the subsequent scoring outburst.

The inning began with a series of miscues from the Athletics. After Anthony Volpe reached base, Lopez issued two walks. The situation worsened when Lopez failed to cover first base on a ground ball hit by Paul Goldschmidt.

This opened the floodgates for the Yankees. Ben Rice followed with a two-run double, and Aaron Judge contributed with a bloop hit. Cody Bellinger then drove in another run with a single.

The struggles were so significant that Athletics pitcher Jacob Lopez was removed from the game after Bellinger’s at-bat. The subsequent reliever, Michael Kelly, also struggled, allowing five more batters to reach base safely.

Remarkably, the Yankees scored 10 runs before recording the first out of the inning. The offensive onslaught continued with Goldschmidt returning to the plate and striking out, but Ben Rice then delivered a two-run triple.

The third inning saw the Yankees accumulate 11 hits, four walks, and four stolen bases. The 13 runs scored in that inning mark the most for the franchise since they scored the same number against the Tampa Bay Rays on June 21, 2005.

This offensive output was also just one run shy of the franchise record for runs scored in a single inning, a record set on July 6, 1920, against the Washington Senators.

Furthermore, it was the first time since September 11, 1949, that 12 consecutive batters reached base safely in an inning. This was achieved against the Senators in the first game of a doubleheader.

This impressive streak was just two batters away from an MLB record, which was set by the Detroit Tigers with 14 consecutive batters reaching base in the sixth inning on June 17, 1925.

“Remarkable,” stated Yankees manager Aaron Boone, expressing his satisfaction with the team’s performance. “Glad we were able to make it stand up.”

Boone acknowledged the offensive brilliance of the inning but also noted that it wasn’t necessarily the “prettiest game on either side.” However, he emphasized the team’s ability to capitalize on a significant opportunity.

For Athletics manager Mark Kotsay, the inning was a stark contrast, described as a “nightmare.” He struggled to find words to adequately describe the sequence of events.

“I really don’t know how to describe that inning,” Kotsay said. “Obviously, the two walks became an issue right away. Hit after hit, really. At some point you figure the ball’s going to go at someone, and it never did.”

The New York Yankees ultimately won the game with a final score of 13-8, thanks in large part to their historic third-inning performance.
