Smith had completed his redshirt freshman season with the Wildcats. Head coach Will Stein expressed the program’s deep sorrow, stating on X, “Today our hearts are broken. Our thoughts and prayers are with Nic’s family, friends, teammates and everyone who knew and loved him.”

University police responded to a report of a possible body at an on-campus residence hall. The university later confirmed Smith’s passing.

A university spokesperson indicated that the University of Kentucky Police Department, in conjunction with the Lexington-Fayette County Coroner, is investigating the incident. The initial findings do not suggest any foul play was involved.

Nic Smith was a sophomore enrolled in the community leadership and development program within the Martin-Gatton College of Agriculture, Food and Environment. His affectionate nicknames, “Happy” and “Big Happ,” are noted on his profile on the Kentucky athletic department’s website, reflecting his personality and standing within the team.

Prior to his collegiate career, Smith was a standout athlete at Walnut Grove High School in Loganville, Georgia, where he excelled in both football and basketball.
