Possible Hantavirus Case Under Investigation in Upstate New York, Unrelated to Cruise Ship Outbreak

SouthernWorldwide.com – A potential case of hantavirus is currently under investigation in upstate New York, according to the Ontario County Public Health Department (OCPHD). The health department, based in Canandaigua, announced on Thursday that it is looking into a “suspected locally acquired hantavirus case.”

Officials from OCPHD were quick to emphasize that this situation has no connection to a recent deadly outbreak linked to a cruise ship. They also stated that there is no risk to the general public.

This local investigation comes at a time when global health authorities are closely monitoring a rare hantavirus outbreak associated with the luxury cruise ship MV Hondius. This outbreak has reportedly sickened several passengers and crew members, and tragically, has resulted in three fatalities.

As of May 13, the World Health Organization (WHO) confirmed that 11 cases of hantavirus have been identified in connection with the cruise ship outbreak. This includes eight confirmed cases, two probable cases, and one inconclusive case. Three deaths have been directly linked to this specific outbreak.

Health experts have consistently stressed that hantavirus infections are uncommon and that the risk posed to the wider community remains low. The transmission of hantavirus from person to person is considered extremely rare, with such instances only suspected in certain strains, like the Andes hantavirus strain that has been linked to the cruise ship outbreak.

The OCPHD noted that hantavirus infections are infrequent in New York. The virus is primarily transmitted through contact with the droppings of mice and rodents, particularly when their urine, feces, or nesting materials become airborne during cleaning activities.

To mitigate potential risks, the OCPHD is advising residents to exercise caution when cleaning enclosed spaces where rodents might be present. This includes wearing gloves and masks when opening or cleaning areas such as attics, cabins, sheds, and garages.

The hantavirus outbreak on the MV Hondius has led to increased precautionary measures being implemented internationally. In the Netherlands, for example, the Radboud University Medical Center placed 12 staff members under quarantine.

This quarantine was initiated after it was reported that a hantavirus patient’s blood and urine were not handled with the most stringent international protocols required for that specific virus strain. Hospital officials stated that while the risk of infection to the staff was considered low, the quarantine was a precautionary step.

The outbreak aboard the MV Hondius began after the ship, carrying 147 passengers and crew, departed from Argentina on April 1 for a voyage in the South Atlantic. According to the WHO, investigators believe that the initial infection may have originated from exposure to rodents during birdwatching excursions undertaken before passengers boarded the ship.
