SouthernWorldwide.com – Details are emerging about an incident where an American flag was displayed upside down at a Somali Independence Day event in Minnesota, causing outrage and apologies. The situation quickly went viral on social media.

Despite claims that the upside-down flag was an accident, some in the community expressed skepticism. They questioned how such an error could go unnoticed by event organizers, local politicians giving speeches, and various participating organizations like the AFL-CIO and the Minnesota Democratic–Farmer–Labor Party (DFL).

Councilman Brodeen reported that a Facebook friend alerted him to the issue on the evening of July 3. By the time he arrived at the event, the flag had already been corrected. He was informed by a St. Cloud police officer that the department had received complaints and had ensured the flag was repositioned correctly.

The flag remained inverted long enough for the incident to gain significant attention online. A post on the Facebook account “Rocks & Cows of Minnesota” highlighted the situation. This account is named after a notable comment made by Minnesota Governor Tim Walz, who once referred to rural Minnesota as “mostly rocks and cows.”

Some social media users directed their anger toward the event’s sponsors, which included US Bank, according to Alpha News. Councilman Brodeen voiced his concerns, questioning the oversight. He found it particularly troubling that politicians campaigning during the nation’s 250th birthday milestone remained silent and did not take a stand for the flag and its symbolism.

Another individual, Neumeister, spoke with attendees who claimed not to have noticed the flag’s improper display. When she contacted the mayor’s office, a spokesperson suggested that a city staffer might have made a mistake. Neumeister expressed disbelief, questioning the competence of any staff member who wouldn’t know the correct way to fly an American flag.

Nearly a week after the event, apologies from those involved began to be issued. The event organizer communicated to the city that the flag’s orientation was unintentional and apologized for the error. The city emphasized its seriousness in upholding the proper display of the American flag and acknowledged its significance within the community. They also noted that this was the first such incident in over 11 years of working with this organizer.

The mayor added that the city appreciated residents who contacted the police. The flag was reportedly fixed before the first speaker began at 6 p.m. The mayor also provided the event’s permit, which was issued to Internal Housing Assistant, a local nonprofit dedicated to assisting immigrant communities with housing.

St. Cloud is recognized as having one of the largest Somali communities in Minnesota, a state with the most Somali immigrants in the United States. Podi, who posted the viral video from the event on Facebook, took full responsibility for the upside-down flag. He maintained that it was never intended as a sign of disrespect to the United States, its citizens, veterans, or attendees of the celebration.

Podi committed to ensuring that such an incident would not happen again. Councilman Brodeen commented on the issue, stating that while people have the right to protest by flying a flag upside down, it should not be done. He emphasized the importance of gratitude for the country that has provided so much and highlighted the sacrifice of those who have died for the flag and its representation, calling the disrespect “unfathomable.”
