SouthernWorldwide.com – Ahead of Independence Day, a conservative political action committee, Lone Star Liberty, has criticized Democratic Senate hopeful James Talarico for his remarks about the American flag being a “complicated symbol.” The group has labeled Talarico as “an America-laster” due to these statements.

Lone Star Liberty PAC released an attack advertisement on Thursday that specifically targeted Talarico, a Democratic state lawmaker who is aiming to win a crucial Senate seat. The ad contrasts Talarico’s statement with imagery of Americans proudly displaying the flag. The advertisement concludes with the assertion, “It’s not complicated. It’s 250 years of freedom.”

“Talarico has made it his mission throughout his entire political career to make that clear: whether it’s saying the American flag is a ‘complicated symbol’ or his attacks on the Bible and the American family,” stated Keller, a representative from the PAC.

Keller drew a parallel between Talarico and the Republican nominee for the Senate, Ken Paxton, who is currently the Texas Attorney General. He emphasized the importance of Texans understanding the stakes of this election. “We think it’s important Texans realize this Independence Day what the stakes in this election are: an America-loving Patriot, Ken Paxton, or an America-laster, James Talarico,” Keller remarked.

Keller also mentioned that Ken Paxton would be vacationing in Iceland for the Fourth of July. He highlighted Paxton’s financial success in office and accusations of abusing his position for personal gain and that of his wealthy donors.

Talarico, a former middle school teacher from San Antonio and a Presbyterian seminarian, gained national attention earlier this year. He secured the Democratic Party’s nomination for the U.S. Senate by defeating Rep. Jasmine Crockett, D-Texas. Since then, Talarico has faced considerable criticism for past controversial statements. These include expressing that he “hates Christianity,” referring to God as “nonbinary,” and asserting that “radicalized white men are the greatest domestic terrorist threat in our country.”

In a recently resurfaced video clip, Talarico is seen speaking to a church congregation. He discusses the reclaiming of symbols and specifically mentions the American flag. “I often think, when reclaiming symbols, I think about the American flag. I think the Confederate flag is a symbol of treason and terrorism. But the American flag is such a complicated symbol for most of us,” he says in the clip.

Talarico further elaborated on his view of the American flag in the same clip. “In many ways, like Jesus, like the cross, it’s [the American flag] been co-opted and, in some ways, its true meaning has been betrayed,” he stated.

In response to the criticisms, a spokesperson for Talarico, Koch, dismissed the attacks as “over the top” and “absurd.” Koch suggested that such criticisms are easily ignored, especially when defending a politician like Ken Paxton, whom Koch referred to as “the Most Corrupt Politician in America.”
