Platner officially suspended his campaign for the Senate on Wednesday. This decision came in the wake of an accusation of rape made by a former girlfriend. The formal process to remove Platner from the election ballot was completed on Friday, with the necessary paperwork filed. This action effectively ends his bid for the Senate seat.
The financial aspect of the vetting process has also come under scrutiny. Platner’s campaign defended its decision to opt for a shortened vetting by citing a lack of initial financial resources for a more extensive background check. The campaign reportedly spent just over $6,000 on this abbreviated process, a figure significantly lower than the tens of thousands typically required for a comprehensive candidate evaluation.
However, this justification is complicated by Platner’s subsequent success as a fundraiser. He rapidly emerged as one of the most effective Democratic fundraisers nationwide, amassing over $16 million in contributions between July 2025 and June 2026. In light of Platner’s withdrawal, Democrats in Maine are now preparing to select a new nominee. A nominating convention is scheduled to take place before the statutory deadline of July 13, which is the last day to remove a candidate from the ballot.
