SouthernWorldwide.com – Several popular beaches in Southern California are experiencing recurring closures due to ongoing sewage contamination of coastal waters.

In Coronado, a community situated near San Diego, county authorities have issued advisories recommending that visitors refrain from entering the water. Warning signs have been posted along the shoreline, alerting the public to potential health risks associated with exposure to polluted runoff that is entering the Pacific Ocean.

The primary source of this contamination is identified as the Tijuana River, which carries untreated wastewater from Mexico into U.S. territorial waters. Subsequently, ocean currents transport this pollution northward along the coast.

The magnitude of the problem is substantial, according to officials. Reports indicate that up to 30 million gallons of sewage-contaminated water can be discharged into the Pacific Ocean each day from Tijuana. This influx pollutes beaches stretching along the Southern California coastline, as detailed by The Wall Street Journal.

Even exclusive beachfront properties have not been spared from the impact. The waters adjacent to the historic Hotel del Coronado have faced closure due to unsafe conditions, according to the same outlet.

Sewage pollution originating from the Tijuana River has been linked to a range of health issues in nearby communities, including respiratory problems and other illnesses.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that hydrogen sulfide, a gas commonly associated with sewage, can cause irritation to the eyes and respiratory system. In higher concentrations, it may lead to more severe health consequences.

Contact with contaminated water can result in gastrointestinal illnesses. Additionally, airborne toxins present in the polluted water have been associated with headaches and breathing difficulties.

Medical professionals and community advocates have noted that children appear to be particularly affected. Some reports indicate an increase in asthma symptoms, skin rashes, and other health problems attributed to the pollution, according to the California publication CalMatters.
