SouthernWorldwide.com – American Airlines has announced it will temporarily suspend six routes during August and September due to the significant increase in jet fuel costs, a situation exacerbated by the ongoing conflict in Iran.
The airline confirmed to CBS News that these schedule adjustments are a direct response to elevated fuel prices. An American Airlines spokesperson clarified that these route suspensions are not permanent.
“American is not suspending any routes indefinitely as part of this adjustment,” the spokesperson stated. The specific routes affected by this temporary measure include:
- Los Angeles to Cleveland
- Los Angeles to Columbus
- Los Angeles to Pittsburgh
- Los Angeles to Washington Dulles
- Charlotte to Ontario
- Charlotte to Sacramento
Industry analysts indicate that jet fuel typically constitutes between 25% and 30% of an airline’s total operational expenses. The conflict in Iran has disrupted global oil supplies, leading to a surge in operating costs for air carriers.
In response to these rising costs, airlines have resorted to various strategies. Some have increased ticket prices or implemented surcharges for jet fuel. Others, like American Airlines, are temporarily cutting routes that are no longer profitable under the current economic conditions.
American Airlines has assured customers holding tickets for the suspended flights that they will be accommodated. Options include rebooking on an alternative flight or providing a full refund.
The airline is not alone in its efforts to mitigate the impact of escalating jet fuel expenses. Delta Airlines, for example, recently increased its baggage fees, citing “evolving global conditions.” European carriers such as KLM Royal Dutch Airlines and Lufthansa have also announced route suspensions as a consequence of higher jet fuel costs.
