As a Lifetime NAACP Member, Playing Politics with Football is “Out of Bounds

SouthernWorldwide.com – The National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP), an organization historically at the forefront of the struggle for equal justice under the law, has initiated a campaign titled “Out of Bounds.” The campaign aims to persuade Black athletes, supporters, and donors to boycott college football programs located in southern states, citing disputes over congressional redistricting.

The connection between college football and redistricting is nonexistent. This action does not represent civil rights advocacy; instead, it is the exploitation of a cherished American tradition and the economic influence of Black athletic talent for purely partisan objectives.

As a lifelong member of the NAACP, a former Indiana attorney general, and a prosecutor with decades dedicated to equal justice, I express profound sorrow and anger. The organization that was instrumental in dismantling Jim Crow is now involving amateur sports in cultural conflicts, transforming football fields into political arenas and jeopardizing the very opportunities it purports to protect.

The NAACP’s chosen targets are predictably one-sided, focusing on Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas, and South Carolina. These states, led by Republicans, have revised their electoral maps following recent Supreme Court decisions that limit racial gerrymandering.

However, the NAACP has remained silent regarding similar redistricting efforts undertaken by Democrats in states with Democratic leadership. California, for instance, aggressively redrew its electoral maps to favor the Democratic party, potentially securing additional seats. Virginia’s attempt by Democrats to reshape districts for partisan advantage was ultimately halted by its own state Supreme Court.

This selective focus clearly indicates that the campaign is driven by political motives rather than principle. Redistricting disputes are a nationwide issue. Singling out red states and the South suggests regional and political scapegoating, rather than consistent advocacy for fair electoral maps.

The contradiction is further highlighted by the NAACP’s opposition to the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility (SAVE) Act. The organization denounces requirements for proof of citizenship and enhanced voter identification as racist voter suppression tactics. Simultaneously, it advocates for the creation and preservation of Black voting blocs and Black congressional districts.

This approach resembles segregation under a different guise. The NAACP dedicated decades to eliminating racial classifications in voting and representation. Now, it appears to be defending them. True equality under the law should involve colorblind districts drawn based on traditional principles such as compactness, contiguity, and community interests, not engineered racial majorities that treat voters as mere demographic components.

Demanding race-based districts while opposing basic election security measures erodes public trust and contradicts the organization’s historical mission. The NAACP, founded in 1909 amidst widespread lynchings and the Springfield race riot, united Black and White Americans to combat violence, segregation, and disenfranchisement. Its legal strategies led to landmark victories, including Brown v. Board of Education, the Civil Rights Act, and the Voting Rights Act.

The organization historically stood for equality, not for perpetuating racial grievances. However, over the past five decades, the NAACP has increasingly aligned itself with the liberal left. The persistent issues in Black urban communities, such as family breakdown, underperforming schools, and ongoing poverty, speak for themselves regarding the effectiveness of this approach.

By prioritizing partisan political maneuvers over universal principles, the organization has diminished its credibility as an impartial arbiter. The “Out of Bounds” initiative represents a new low, turning college football—a merit-based arena where talent and hard work transcend race—into a racially charged endeavor for financial and political gain.

Black athletes generate billions in revenue for prominent college football programs. Threatening boycotts to achieve political concessions reduces these athletes to mere pawns rather than individuals striving for excellence. This echoes the very racial intimidation tactics that the original NAACP fought against, now being employed in a context where race is irrelevant to the sport itself.

College football should serve as a unifying force, not a divisive one. It provides young men from all walks of life with discipline, education, and opportunities. Dragging it into redistricting disputes is a disservice to the athletes, the fans, and the pursuit of genuine equality.

The NAACP owes its members, its rich history, and the nation a better approach. It should return to the foundational principles of 1909: equal justice, not engineered outcomes. The organization must cease politicizing sports and instead focus on addressing genuine barriers to opportunity, such as family structure, education, and cultural issues.

This means shifting focus away from scapegoating electoral maps in red states while overlooking political maneuvering in blue states. America’s most significant civil rights victories were achieved through moral persuasion and universal principles, not through boycotting Saturday football games.

The NAACP’s brand is too valuable, and its legacy too hard-won, to be squandered on such a divisive and unproductive stunt.
