As gas prices rise, consumers seek alternative savings

SouthernWorldwide.com – As the national average price for a gallon of gasoline continues its upward trend since the onset of the war with Iran, consumers are actively seeking ways to offset the increased cost of fuel.

In Killeen, Texas, the price of gasoline has risen by $1.28 per gallon. This surge translates to an additional expense of approximately $90 each month for Charles Rice to fill his truck.

“$3.96 instead of $4.12 or $4.20 or what have you, so that’s what brought me in here today,” Rice stated while refueling at Casey’s General Stores. Casey’s is recognized as the nation’s third-largest convenience store chain, boasting nearly 300 locations spread across 19 states. Notably, two-thirds of these locations are situated in towns with populations of 20,000 or less.

Casey’s CEO Darren Rebelez anticipates a 20% increase in store visits during the Memorial Day weekend, marking the commencement of the chain’s “100 days of summer” initiative. Rebelez highlighted the resilience of consumers and the company’s strategy to maintain competitive fuel pricing.

“The consumers have been hanging in there, and we tend to price our fuel at the lower end,” Rebelez commented.

Prior to the escalation of the Middle East conflict in February, the national average price for a gallon of gasoline was just under $3.

Currently, the average cost of a gallon of gas across the United States stands at $4.50. This represents an increase of over $1.50 since the conflict began, according to data from AAA. Furthermore, a forecast released by the U.S. Energy Information Administration on May 12 projected that retail gas prices would average $3.88 per gallon for the remainder of the year and $3.62 per gallon in 2027.

The rising cost of gasoline is prompting consumers to make adjustments in other spending categories. Sales of Casey’s own branded snacks, which are priced approximately one dollar lower than national brands, have seen an increase.

“People normally want things that are going to be a little bit more affordable,” shared customer Tiffany Bishop. “Especially when you have kids that want to pick up snacks.”

Rebelez indicated that many consumers are choosing Casey’s due to its more economical offerings. He elaborated that during periods of financial strain, their stores are perceived as a superior value proposition.

“When we get into times like this, where you know, budgets are stretched a little bit, we’re viewed as a better value option,” Rebelez explained.
