SouthernWorldwide.com – Bayer has proposed a significant settlement amounting to $7.25 billion aimed at resolving the numerous lawsuits alleging that its Roundup weedkiller caused non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
This proposed settlement, if approved by the court, would involve Monsanto, a subsidiary of Bayer, making annual payments over a period of up to 21 years. Individuals who have been diagnosed with non-Hodgkin lymphoma and were exposed to Roundup prior to the announcement of this settlement are eligible to file claims for compensation.
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma is a serious medical condition characterized by the development of cancer in white blood cells known as lymphocytes. These lymphocytes are a crucial component of the body’s immune system, responsible for fighting off infections.
In a statement released on Tuesday, Bayer emphasized that this agreement does not signify any admission of liability or wrongdoing on their part. The company indicated that these settlements would increase its total litigation liability from an estimated 7.8 billion euros ($9.2 billion) to 11.8 billion euros ($13.9 billion).
Bayer, a prominent German company operating in the agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors, also announced on the same day that it had reached separate agreements to resolve other cases related to Roundup. However, the specific terms of these additional settlements were not disclosed.
The company has been entangled in thousands of lawsuits concerning Roundup since its acquisition of Monsanto in 2018 for a substantial sum of $63 billion. In 2020, Bayer had already announced plans to pay up to $10.9 billion to settle approximately 125,000 claims, encompassing both filed and unfiled cases.
Further complicating matters, a jury in California three years later awarded a man $332 million. The jury’s decision was based on the finding that Monsanto had failed to adequately inform consumers about the potential risks associated with using Roundup.
Despite the ongoing legal challenges, Roundup remains available for purchase through online platforms and various major retail outlets. Bayer continues to assert that its Roundup products are safe, stating that the ingredients have undergone thorough testing and review processes.
