SouthernWorldwide.com – WNBA coach Becky Hammon has stated she will not apologize for her previous comments about Jalen Brunson, even after his stellar performance leading the New York Knicks to a championship and earning Finals MVP honors.

In 2023, Hammon expressed her opinion that Brunson was not a “1A dude” and suggested that teams with a small primary player wouldn’t achieve ultimate success. This take was aired on ESPN’s “NBA Today.”

Hammon reiterated her stance in late May, questioning why her opinion on Brunson continued to draw so much attention. She remained firm in her position on Tuesday, despite Brunson’s recent championship achievement.

Despite Brunson’s historic run, culminating in a Finals MVP award and leading the Knicks to their first title in 53 years, Hammon has refused to retract or apologize for her earlier assessment.

Hammon commented on Brunson’s performance after the Las Vegas Aces’ shootaround, stating that Brunson proved his doubters wrong and is an outlier. She believes his name can now be placed alongside legends like Steph Curry and Isiah Thomas, praising his brilliant play, particularly in crucial moments.

“I mean, he was that 1A dude,” Hammon remarked. “But apologize, I’m never gonna apologize for having an opinion. That’s what ESPN pays me for.”

Brunson, who stands at 6-foot-2, delivered an exceptional performance in Game 5 of the NBA Finals, scoring 45 points to secure the Knicks’ victory over the San Antonio Spurs. This performance solidified his status as a franchise icon.

During the Knicks’ championship parade, which celebrated their first title in over five decades, Brunson appeared to subtly address Hammon’s past remarks while speaking to the crowd. He acknowledged that many people have negative things to say and hold their own opinions.

“But when you prove them wrong, you don’t have to say s–t to them. They don’t deserve it,” Brunson stated, implying a lack of need to engage with critics who were proven incorrect.

While Brunson did not directly name Hammon, her comments have been a point of contention for many Knicks fans. Hammon, in a move that seemed to provoke Knicks supporters further, later suggested that Brunson might be the “greatest Knick ever.”

“Let me just piss off Knicks fans again and say, I think he’s the greatest Knick ever,” Hammon said. “Give them something else to talk about. … I’ve always been a Jalen Brunson fan. I was a fan of his at Villanova, in Dallas, and why this comment went off the rails, I have no idea because it was clearly a historical and analytical take.”

When she revisited the topic in May, Hammon expressed that she was open to being “proven wrong.”

Brunson, now in his fourth season with the Knicks, has rapidly established himself as a franchise cornerstone. Over his tenure with the team, he has averaged an impressive 26 points, 5.3 assists, and 3.2 rebounds per game.

His individual accolades include three All-Star selections in four seasons and being named the NBA’s Clutch Player of the Year in the previous season. These achievements highlight his consistent impact and ability to perform under pressure.

Brunson’s performance in the NBA playoffs has been particularly remarkable. He has averaged 29.4 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.7 rebounds across four playoff appearances with the Knicks. His leadership has been instrumental in ending the team’s 53-year drought without a playoff series win.
