SouthernWorldwide.com – Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent addressed past reports of a heated altercation with Bill Pulte, President Donald Trump’s recently appointed acting intelligence chief, during a Senate budget hearing.

Senator Thom Tillis of North Carolina questioned Bessent about an alleged threat made at a dinner party in 2025. Tillis specifically asked if Bessent had told Pulte he was going to “punch them in the face.”

Bessent, with a touch of humor, corrected the senator, stating, “No sir, I actually said I was going to kick his ass.” This remark lightened the mood during the Treasury’s budget hearing.

The exchange brought renewed attention to earlier reports detailing a disagreement between Bessent and Pulte. This scrutiny comes just days after President Trump announced Pulte’s new role as acting director of national intelligence, one of the government’s most critical national security positions.

Reports from September 2025 indicated that Bessent had accused Pulte of undermining him with the president and had threatened to punch him at a dinner. However, when questioned by senators about Pulte’s current appointment, Bessent downplayed the past incident.

Bessent revealed that he had actually called Pulte on Tuesday to congratulate him on his new role. When asked about his comfort level with Pulte’s appointment, Bessent used a sports analogy.

“Many teams squabble in the locker room and go out in the field,” Bessent responded, suggesting that disagreements do not necessarily hinder professional collaboration.

Addressing the alleged dinner quarrel at the time, Bessent commented in a September interview that it was not unprecedented for high-ranking officials to have disagreements. He even drew a historical parallel.

“Treasury secretaries dating back to Alexander Hamilton have a history of dueling,” Bessent stated in a CNBC interview, referencing historical instances of prominent figures engaging in duels.

President Trump had nominated Bill Pulte, who currently serves as the Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency (FHFA), for the acting director of national intelligence role. This followed the announcement by former Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard that she would step down to support her husband after his diagnosis with a rare form of bone cancer.

Pulte is expected to continue his duties as FHFA director and chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac while also serving in the new intelligence role.

Bessent himself was in the news in April 2025 concerning a reported confrontation with Elon Musk, the founder of SpaceX and Tesla. Axios reported at the time that the two men had a shouting match in the West Wing over leadership of the IRS.

Democratic lawmakers have voiced significant opposition to Pulte’s appointment, questioning his qualifications for such a sensitive national security position.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer criticized the selection, stating, “Trump’s appointments of Bill Pulte to serve as acting director of national intelligence appears to have been a hastily considered backroom deal based on loyalty to Trump, not the security of our nation.”

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries echoed these concerns, posing a series of rhetorical questions about Pulte’s background. “What exactly are Bill Pulte qualifications? Does he have a national security background? The answer would be no. Does he have a military background? The answer would be no. Does he have a law enforcement background? The answer would be no,” Jeffries stated.

Jeffries further elaborated on his reservations, adding, “What qualifies Bill Pulte to hold one of the most important national security positions for the United States of America? One thing, apparently, that Bill Pulte is willing to say anything or do anything that Donald Trump demands, no matter how reckless, vengeful or unlawful Donald Trump’s demand may be.”
